Temperament isn't great for being around kids. Lots of hair, combing and long walks every day to keep its energy down. Maybe a Labrador, Golden Retriever, Springer Spaniel if OP just wants a placid dog, calm and trustworthy around kids? Probably best avoiding rescue dogs because you don't know how they've really been treated. Take your time deciding as it is 10+ year commitment and a lot of work.

If you can, try to get an older dog from a rescue organization as there are a lot of dogs out there without homes.
