Some claim the whole thing is myth. However why would they make up a myth about having been slaves and treated like crap by another people?

The slavery thing was a myth, but they were in Israel. The reason they claimed it was "slavery" is because they didn't like the communal system that the Egyptians had set up where you actually have to work and not just get handouts. At least that's how my history professor explained it. I'm skeptical, but there is no evidence outside of the Bible that there were Jewish slaves in Egypt.
