Topic: ITT: Definitive PC games.

Anonymous A started this discussion 15 years ago #1,624

I mean games that should follow these criteria(s):
- graphics should be decent
- controls should be extremely easy to handle
- game shouldn't be frustratingly hard (especially due to controls)
- game-play should be diverse as possible
- the story should be interesting enough to not get you to sleep
- the game shouldn't be extremely niche
Basically, the games that you would firstly recommend to someone who just started liking them, while also still easy to be enjoyed by people who play games all the time.

Easy to emulate games are accepted too.

The first one that comes to mind is GTA as a series, because:
* there's no game over in this game. You can die, but this will not stop you from moving on
* you can easily cheat in here. This is useful (and a feature for most newbies) because some shit may get tedious, such as escaping the cops or getting more money for buying weapons. GTA IV sucks because you have to use the phone to do it and SA kinda sucks at it because the codes aren't simple such as with GTA 3 and Vice City
* it's sandbox, while still maintaining a linear story. the mission succession makes sense, but you're not forced to do it.
* the settings are grounded in reality. this is good for people who are not interesting in, I quote: *flying monsters and shit*. I had lots of people complaining when I recommended them Beyond Good and evil (which is another game I consider definitive) because of that
* the gameplay is varied. you have shootings, you have cars, and sometimes you have something more such as bikes and helicopters and in San Andreas you have stealth, you have micromanagement, minigames, character customization ...
* the graphics are decent and detailed, while the sound and the music are more than fine

out of all games, I would choose San Andreas as the most definitive, because it is so varied and so big, followed by Vice City.

I know that Ocarina of Time is the undisputed best game of all time for lots of people, but I couldn't get into it, and I don't feel a newbie could either. You have to emulate the game, the controls are stiff (due to being a console game), there are no voiced dialogues (or maybe I had the wrong ROM, you should correct me on this), the settings are fantasy-based with lots un-ordinary stuff going in there, and the graphics are kinda cheap due to their age. I haven't played more than 15 minutes from it, so I don't know how varied the game is. In short, it has not aged well.

So, what do you think? Do you disagree with my point that Ocarina of Time is not a definitive game, or that GTA is? Do you also have some other ideas of games that you may call "definitive"?

@OP

Emulating the game =/= playing the game on the console. Emulation isn't perfect. You can't fit voices on a 32MB cartridge, even Twilight princess didn't have voices, its a story, not a movie.
Ocarina of time WAS a definitive game, It had everything from intuitive gameplay, difficult puzzles, and well paced, well structured story.
You would be hard pressed to find another game that any person, from any age level could enjoy. Back in 1998 everybody was playing OoT, It was kid friendly, while not being childish.
This age of eye-candy graphics has spoiled kids into rather having a good looking game vs a fun game.

GTA kind of sucked, sure, sandbox, Lets drive around and shoot people, this surely won't get old!

Pong the Next Level was badass. Obviously no photo-realistic graphics but I played that game obsessively for a long while.

if we go that route, everything like super mario bros, tetris, pac-man, pong, space invaders and many more are definitive games.
But I think pong has decent graphics, for what it's supposed to be. But if you think about it, that game was tennis or ping-pong, so a game like Rockstar's table tennis or virtua tennis are "more definitive".
Man, now I sound like I'm sucking rockstar's dick.

> Emulating the game =/= playing the game on the console. Emulation isn't perfect. You can't fit voices on a 32MB cartridge, even Twilight princess didn't have voices, its a story, not a movie.
Well, Nintendo 64 is out of circulation. That's why I made a thread about PC games, because you can play them no matter on what generation you belonged to.
As for the fact that it doesn't have voices because it's not a movie, then I could argue that it's not a book either, so it doesn't have to have text. It's a game, which is better because it could take things from everything.

> Ocarina of time WAS a definitive game, It had everything from intuitive gameplay, difficult puzzles, and well paced, well structured story.
I'm not sure about the gameplay, it felt like walking on nails for me. Of course, I wasn't playing it on the original console, so I can't complain. but the gta's had one of the most intuitive interfaces and gameplay of all time.

> You would be hard pressed to find another game that any person, from any age level could enjoy. Back in 1998 everybody was playing OoT, It was kid friendly, while not being childish.
True, that's why I mentioned it in the op. It's only just my opinion that the game wouldn't really be that easy to play for newcomers.
but then again, myst was the best-selling pc game at that time, and I'm barely able to pass through most of the puzzles in that one, followed by sims (which I still find a hard game), so maybe the casual players are not that casual.

> This age of eye-candy graphics has spoiled kids into rather having a good looking game vs a fun game.
nah, that's not true. legend of zelda has bad graphics, but they were the state of art at that time. nintendo stopped caring about graphics (and started milking their cows harder) within the last 5/6 years at most.

> GTA kind of sucked, sure, sandbox, Lets drive around and shoot people, this surely won't get old!
every game gets old eventually, while yet there are still people playing counter strike. the difference is, this one wouldn't get as old as anything else as soon, intentionally because you have many than 1 thing to do. If I take a random FPS like Prey and Pariah, I can finish them once, for the sake of the plot, but I'm not sure I will re-play it ever again, because it's halo/half life all over again, probably with more suck.
Now, I don't say that GTA is the best game of all time in the literal sense, but it's one of the to play by everyone. The only thing that sucks about it it's the violence. I normally play games like Raven Shield and Silent Hill or Broken Sword, but GTA takes the cake as being "all-around good" imo

any other game to recommended?
edit: just so you guys know, this is not "my game is better than your game" thread. I'm just trying to point out if a game could really be recommended nowadays to normal people while you can still enjoy it.

Yeah :[
I still have mine though, and most my collector edition games.

> As for the fact that it doesn't have voices because it's not a movie, then I could argue that it's not a book either, so it doesn't have to have text. It's a game, which is better because it could take things from everything.
Touché.

> I'm not sure about the gameplay, it felt like walking on nails for me. Of course, I wasn't playing it on the original console, so I can't complain.
It really is a very good classic, I guess since i grew up with a NES when I was a kid, the transition to the N64 was a very painless one for me. PJ64 is still a bit buggy from time to time while playing Zelda, its easy to get glitched in places, the graphics don't render correctly in sometimes. The different versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.2 were all slightly different in what bugs occur. My favorite is 1.0, due to the fire temple music, the red blood, and the shield differences.

> nah, that's not true. legend of zelda has bad graphics, but they were the state of art at that time. nintendo stopped caring about graphics (and started milking their cows harder) within the last 5/6 years at most.
Bad graphics? No. If you look at the graphics they stuffed onto a 32MB cartridge, vs some of the games that were on Playstation 1, its obviously superior for 1998, that is. If anything you should try playing the game with the High Resolution Re-Texture pack. I do agree about milking their titles though, its actually pretty depressing.

any other game to recommended? If you have a Wii/Gamecube, I would say play Windwaker, Twilight Princess, and Star Fox Adventures, or if you have a good graphics card and fast broadband, download the ISO's and Dolphin emulator.

The unreleased Half-Life on Dreamcast is quite fun, although there is a glitch in saving that causes the save file to take up an entire VMU.
There were boxes that had dreamcasts and VMUs and shit. It was also the first appearance of the Hi-res models and textures.

I completely disagree with your point that a good game has to be grounded in reality. If you or any of your friends don't like fantasy games, that's just a taste preference. Some people like to play games because they like to get away from reality, enjoy fantasy, and like good fantasy games because it takes more imagination. Games grounded in reality are good too, but I don't think whether the game can be called good or bad can hinge on what sort of genre it is. Everyone likes different genres.

World of Warcraft is one of the most successful games of all time, and it's pure fantasy. Zelda, Halo, Half-Life, Mario Brothers, Metroid, Megaman, etc. all fall in the greatest games of all time category and they all have fantasy aspects. Too be honest, I think all the GTA games are over-rated.

> I completely disagree with your point that a good game has to be grounded in reality. If you or any of your friends don't like fantasy games, that's just a taste preference.

I specially mentioned this is not a "good games" thread, because there's a difference. Silent Hill 2 and Planescape Torment are great games, but they're not definitive. If someone hates the guts out of Silent Hill, it's completely explainable because the gameplay is broken, or in planescape torment, there is too much text.
A definitive game is the same how Godfather and Titanic are definitive movies: when they're both excellent for expert and the beginner.
I mentioned that Beyond Good and Evil, which is an all-around sci-fi and fantasy game, is another definitive one, but probably not as hard to digest by everyone. The people who want to get away from reality are all playing games, because GTA is not reality either (even though it is grounded in reality). Every fiction is good as a video game playing ground, but a realistic setting is more definitive because it's easily digestible by all the gamers at the time.
Sometime ago I was playing WOW with some classmates, but unlike them, I never talked about it outside the game itself, why they did it all the time. And everyone else was making fun of them, but I'm sure they wouldn't do the same with say, Counter Strike or GTA. There's a reason why nerds are stereotyped as loving Star Trek and Dungeons and Dragons.

I'm not saying that they're bad, because they're not really. But they are never going to be everyone's cup of tea because this escapism from reality is harder to digest by a lot of people, especially when it doesn't make sense like in some games. They can still be called definitive, but not AS MUCH as GTA.

About Half Life, they're my favorite shooters of all time, but I'm sure if they're definitive. The second one doesn't have a nice multiplayer, but has better gameplay, while the first one has outdated gameplay while having multiplayer.

But Halo 1 could be considered a definitive FPS game, because it has a bit of everything (a diverse weapon system, lots of vehicles, the shield which is a big change in games) and the multiplayer is really nice.

So a game like Civilization is impossible to be called like that, because it's one of the hardest strategy games series of all time. Games like Warcraft 3 or Starcraft or Company of Heroes are better suited for a name like that.

that's why I find it definitive in the first place. instead of going for a niche genre that someone may or may not like, you go for multiple gameplay activies that also manage to be less repetitive
Sure, it's not perfect in each of the genre (though I think each section is still good in whatever it's supposed to be), but perfection requires bigger focus on that genre alone.

as for offering something, it offers entertainment. what else should I expect from a game like it?

I would say that San Andreas is my favorite, but not sure if "definitive". It's obviously the richest in content, but that's not necessarily a big plus for everyone.
GTA IV sticks with the basics, which is still awesome in its own way, especially since they went with a more realistic approach. I was dissappointed at first because there wasn't as much or even more content as in SA, but it's still fun. It's the third spot in a personal top 4 3D GTA games, second being Vice city.

Not anything in particular to mention, I sometimes use some mods to mess around with cars and my character and stuff. Like this one for Vice City for example, which has romanian cars (I'm from there): http://games.softpedia.com/get/Mods-Addons/GTA-Vice-City-Mamaia-Vice-Mod.shtml

You might go check out the multiplayer mods, like SA:MP. You might get some fun out of some servers (for example, I was a regular in a server based on extreme stunts withing GTA:SA)

I like all the RPGs out of here (I haven't played DMC4, but I heard it's hard as fuck so ... ?) and the Witcher and Planescape Torment are two out of three favorite RPG with a third being Gothic 1. But Witcher 2 hasn't been released yet. And again, this games are good but not definitive.
For example, I tried with both my cousins to hook them with Gothic, even by poorly translating it. It didn't work, and even a WoW guy doesn't want to play this games.

Wurm Online is great if you're into details, realism, and content over accessibility. Likewise for the Arma series, though I never really got too into that. I'd imagine modded it would be fantastic, but the worlds are just too big and multiplayer too long to get into.
