The only ones I can think of where I didn't really like were Crime and Punishment by Dostoyevsky and Heart of Darkness by Conrad.
I'm sure there are others that were just kinda "meh" to me, but the above two actually irritated me. I read them about ten years ago, though. Maybe if I tried again now they'd seem not as bad.

I keep trying to get into Proust, but it hasn't clicked yet.
Also: Steppenwolf. Hermann Hesse writes about mid-life crises; I read this in high school and was bored out of my skull.

i tried reading a book by henry james and it was the most pretentious shit i have ever laid eyes upon; i gave up when i came across a sentence that was half a page long, with about 10.000 punctuation marks.

I was about to comment on Finnegan's Wake; maybe now I shouldn't, but here I am anyway.
It starts where it finishes, and sometimes the sentences go on for days. But there's very little punctuation! Heh.
Joyce is the kind of badass that writes only for himself, and in multiple tongues, but enough english to get by.
It's mad and lucid and completely pretentious, yes. Def recommended if you're into that kind of shit though, as a foray at least.
Also, sorry, I'm full of absinthe atm and can't tell if I'm being an onboxious prick or what. Posting anyway. <3

Awesome, and nice. I want to both reread Confederacy and build another set of shelves now, thanks to you. My book situation is getting kind of out of hand again, so many stacks of things I want to read. And reread. And beat myself up over never getting around to.
