Facebook sure seems to be acquiring a lot of patents, and have definitely gained purchase in the web-wide ID field, so I don't think they'll will be completely irrelevant any time soon, unfortunately. I'd be completely unsurprised if you needed either a logged-in facebook or google account to (legitimately) access a large chuck of the web 10 years from now. For "security purposes," of course. Anonymity is being criminalized as we speak.

I know, I know. FB will/has already lost its chic, of course. Anywhere you're connected to the entirety of your HS graduating class, plus your parents, is axiomatically uncool. But there's the rub: Myspace was for emo scenesters who abandoned it after the fad. Facebook is the girl-next-door we've discovered ourselves married to, becoming ever more complacent and dumpy. It is the sweatpants of the internet. It is the very loss of hope. Many of us will die without having undergone that messy divorce we've dreamt of for years, simply because it's so much easier to stay.
