Because PHP's strtotime uses that. If you prefer to type in the dates you can do DD-MM-YYYY instead, or type in "5 days ago"

But it doesn't work. It displays "23 May" on the calendar but the results ignore it unless you enter the dates as MM-DD-YYYY.

Because it expects MM/DD/YYYY and it won't be able to differentiate. If you want to manually use the DD/MM/YYYY you have to use -'s instead of /'s to indicate that you're using that other format.
