Around the house I am usually not too squeamish about it. I figure my body is pretty familiar with any germs it may have picked up on the floor/counter/whatever. If it's covered in dirt or something, I'll usually throw it out if there isn't a curious cat around that wants to have a go at seeing if it is edible.
