No one with a serious chance at office wants to risk taking their shot at office against an incumbent Obama, so the Republican field this time around is a battle ground for second tier, no-hope losers to try to out-crazy each other while we all watch. However it works out, it will make the 2016 Republican nominees look good by comparison.

And it was a three way tie, with Paul, Romney and Santorum each winning 7 delegates. Gingrich and Perry relegated to a distant second tier, winning only 2 delegates each.

I suspect Santorum is merely the next flash in the pan (a la Bachmann, Cain, Gingrich) and will fail as soon as he goes under any scrutiny.
