Topic: Why can't you play Steam games without the client?

Anonymous A started this discussion 15 years ago #15,876

It tends to get a bit annoying having to load up the client just to play some of your games.

Because DRM, I think.
At least it's not a horribly bloated client that steals all your personal info, like some platforms.

Are you referring to EA's Origin?

I might be.

it does both of those things

Steam consumes barely a tenth the ram than Origin does, and doesn't scan literally every file in your PC.

well yes because steam has been in the market for years, of course it has better performance.
> and doesn't scan literally every file in your PC.
what is the stuff it uploads all the time then though?

Save data I think. That is if the game uses Steam cloud.
@276,081 (B)
Does Origin really scan all of the files on your PC?

@276,082 (dw !AIy/L67q.s)
Doesn't matter how low it's been out. EA simply can't craft a product that works efficiently

And there's no evidence that those uploads are personal data. However, you can literally watch Origin sift through your files on first-run.

Now I'm scared for the sake of The Sims 3 now.

Luckily for me, I got the retail version of Pets which is the latest expansion pack and it was separate from Origin.

The manual had two installation instructions, one for retail and one for Origin.

Will The Sims 3 become exclusively Origin?

mainly because steam is really just a browser that shows steampowered.com and origin is a complete program.

If EA can help it, a game will be forced to use Origin in some way.
However, The Sims 3 is a pre-Origin game of 2009. I don't think they'll retroactively make it dependent on Origin, but future titles might see such.

lol.

Steam:
> A simple game manager in the program, and a browser for the Store and Account.
Origin:
> A simple game manager in the program, and a browser for the Store and Account.

They're identical. EA tried to clone Steam and succeeded in making a program that does the exact same things at ten times the resource cost.

Does this mean any future expansions won't be Origin required?

Also, Origin is/was the EA Download Manager, right?

Because you need that (well, used to) in order to patch the game, but there's simprograms that releases all of the patches anyway.

@previous (A)
They may or may not be. Most likely not, I'd think. Too much effort to just to lock down a single expansion.

EA Download Manager was a failed venture because, like anything made by EA, it just plain sucked. Origin, of course, is a pile of shit, too, and deserves the same fate. The only reason anyone's even heard of it is because they're now forcing it onto some games, even if you don't purchase digital copies.

/v/ told me that because of the casual market of The Sims, they wouldn't be too quick to force Origin upon it if you purchase a retail version.
Is this true?

Hm. I don't know about that, but I don't see why the casual market would stop them.
Ruining games is what they're best at. They'll eventually leave no one standing, even the casuals.

I like Steam's take on DRM, it's unobtrusive and not inconvenient, which is pretty impressive considering how much most game companies enjoy completely ruining the experiences of their customers.

I think what they meant by the "casual market" is the popularity of the game.
Since The Sims and World of Warcraft are two of the highest selling PC games.
