I can't believe people are taking these conversations as evidence that Kimmo is more civil and stable than we thought he was just because he lays off the caps lock key a bit more when talking to his asskissers. Did you all think he was some kind of ranting lunatic who's so out of control that he can't function at all in normal society? He clearly holds himself together well enough to do a bit of programming and to live a fairly independent life without a personal nurse or anything. He's never been arrested or in prison (recently at least), as evidenced by the fact that a day never goes by without him posting bulletins.

The fact that he's more calm in these conversations just gives us a clearer view into his screwed-up, maladaptive, paranoid thinking unobscured by ranting and raving.

-Instantly pouncing on the new guy (Sylvester) for a comma error in his first post and predicting that he'll be a shitty mod after one post
-Denouncing anyone who questions him in any way as a retard and/or "traitor" and/or troll.
-Making unreasonable demands of personal time for a thankless, unpaid job.

Bayesian filtering (at least as it's described on wikipedia) wouldn't apply to detecting duplicates. Bayesian filtering distinguishes "Spam" from "Non-Spam" by learning which words tend to pop up only in "Spam" messages and which words tend to pop up only in "Non-Spam" messages. To apply it to the problem of finding duplicate posts, the "Spam words" would be any word posted in any thread ever on AnT, and the "Non-Spam" words would literally be "everything else". So depending on how it was set up, probably either pretty much every post would get flagged (because every use of every word the filter knows about had been in a "Spam" post) or *no* posts would get flagged (because there are faaar more theoretically possible posts in the "everything else" category using any given word). If one wanted to shoehorn this solution onto the problem there'd need to be major modifications to the basic algorithm that I'm guessing Kimmo doesn't have the intelligence to produce (nor the motivation, if he had any sense, since the problem isn't really related to spam filtering).

My own guess (i.e. the first thing I'd try if I had this problem) is that he keeps a big raw text file containing all previous posts, and checks each sequence of 5 (or whatever) words in an attempted post against the text file looking for matches. Even if the "troll" modified the post, it'd be a pain to change at least one word out of every consecutive 5.

I ran a few quickie tests in Python when this came up on IWAB a while ago and it really wouldn't be terribly slow. The data could also be compressed in obvious ways to reduce the amount of text to search through, but there really isn't all that much data if you sit down and figure it out. Roughly 600,000 posts times ~75% survival rate times ~30 words per post on average times 5 bytes per word on average = ~65 mb. False positives could be weeded out somewhat by comparing the post sizes and seeing if they were an approximate match (or by making moderators/slaves manually compare each match).

Some kind of "percentage" could be easily calculated by checking how many possible 5-word sequences match up to the old post, or by whatever other scheme you can think of.

Yes, that actually sounds more reasonable (especially the second point), though your view of fun is disputable.

This is a screen shot of my last real attempt at trying to make Kimmo see sense. I think this was a day before I quit. It may be a little hard to follow but basically I had said to him "Look, we disagree on a number of things... please tell me if you agree or disagree with the following:" and then listed the usual complaints that people have with his board.
