This is pretty interesting. They want it to be the same day in Samoa as it is in Australia and New Zealand, but the location of the international dateline means they are currently 21-23 hours behind these countries, even though they are near each other.

Their solution is to simply delete this coming Friday from their calendar. It will go from Thur Dec 30th 2011 to Sat Jan 1st 2012.

There is currently opposition to the move in Samoa because they will be missing a day which is important to several religious groups. This would have existed back then, too.

People on salaries would have been paid for nothing? Interest (which was hated) for nothing? It would have been very hard on commerce and the economy.
