I bought a 16 year old BMW 3 series a couple weeks ago and already I have been told by a mechanic that the gearbox is almost completely fucked... The amount he quoted me for a new one is about twice the value of the fucking car. I asked for advice about old BMWs on-line before I purchased the fucking thing and no-one warned me about this shit. How difficult is it for someone with zero mechanical experience to change the gearbox in a car?! This is ridiculous.

Try not buying such an old car in the future. :')

Better how? Unless he quotes me less than half of the other fuckhead there is no point.

it's a snap, OP. You can download a teardown manual in .pdf, acquire the appropriate tools and parts, follow a few in instructions -and you're through!
piece of cake, really.

It isn't happening. Sorry. Just start coming to terms with that now.

Hardly a logical comparison. I know 10-year-olds with a greater intellect level than the average mechanic.

OP, next time, could you kindly put a bit more fake British into this type of post so I could delude myself into believing it's a genuine to4ster post. :(
