I need a HDTV for my room. I'm trying to play Battlefield 3 on some 52" SDTV and I can't see shat. Also HD ready can GTFO.

What model? In what way is your device connected to the TV?
Are you using an xbox 360? If so, did you try connecting it with all 5 pins (Hoping the tv has plugs for those) and flicking the switch to hd?

Unsure on model name, probably round back but is locked into cupboard tightly with wires... too scared to pull out normally I blindly feel for connectors. My xbox came with an RCA to scart connector and no HD switch (possibly a RGB connector thing). My TV can handle the RGB connector + RCA audio cables, but xbox don't love me enough to provide.
