is Android like the Windows to Apple's iOS?

I don't really know much about smartphones.

No, Android is Linux. Windows is Windows Phone. Mac is iOS.

i know that, but in terms of market share and availability of apps is Android more akin to Windows?

Anonymous B replied with this 15 years ago, 1 minute later, 5 minutes after the original post[^] [v] #271,408

@previous (A)
Both have a lot of apps available. iOS has a bigger market share, but android is pushing upwards. I suggest Android due to the open nature, but if you're more into gimmicks and hipster iOS might suit you better.

iOS is.... more for people who rather not chose what they have on their phone.

Android: more control and customizable. Hardware is often better (eg. Galaxy S2 is superior to iphone 4(s).

Iphone/Ipod: Prettier/dumbed-down interface with a lot more high quality apps.

Android is like "Windows" in the way that there's like way more options, but also way more problems. And iPhone is apple because it's apple. And Windows is ummm, like kinda like windows. But like windows 96

I have over 300 apps on my ipod (mostly games) and only about 50 on my Galaxy S2. Apple has a high quality threshold for approving apps, where as I don't think there is an approval process at all with Android.

In some areas, yes. However in all areas, I can't say I agree. Although I've had my iPhones for years, I'm not going to pretend it's the BEST THING EVER!!!

I think as far as reliability goes, I think Apple is often superior. Perhaps only because of it's lack of options though, it is the safe bet. I also like the iPhones more than I like any phone on the market. Except maybe Vertu, but those don't count.

No technology should be considered the best thing ever, because then things won't evolve.

Da-chan da replied with this 15 years ago, 6 minutes later, 4 hours after the original post[^] [v] #271,554

@previous (postmortem !!Qe8ScDbX+)
Oh definitely I will agree with that. See, people give me shit for loving my iPhone so much, but if you don't need lots of apps and shit like me, it's perfect. I use my iPhone mainly to call, text, email, music, GPS, and maybe a couple other small things. So yeah, my iPhone is great and it's durable. Screen cracks, it'll still work. I mean everything beyond easy texting, calling, GPS, email, mobile web, and music is just a plus. I thought about switching to Android, but see, with iPhone everything you can think of you want is already made. Android phones, there's so many variations, so the chances of someone making what you want for your phone is less likely. However, iPhones all being the same, someone has probably thought of an idea you have. It's happened many times for me. Pandora Skip Hack, QuickReply for SMS, SnapTap, Music Controls Pro, and a shitload more. Also, switching from iPhone to Android would mean I would have to repurchase everything I've bought. Yes, I buy apps that I think are actually great like Music Controls Pro, biteSMS, QuickReply for SMS before it was free, and some others. Anyway, I'm rambling.

I've owned both and can't imagine going back to iPhone. Not that it's bad, it's just
aggravating to be walled in.

If you install tons of shit you probably will have more problems with Android though. I'd say if apps are your thing, go with iPhone. But if you mainly use core functions: GPS, phone, email, music player, file storage, etc; you are better off with Android IMO.

мeowth replied with this 15 years ago, 2 hours later, 3 days after the original post[^] [v] #272,542

Here's a question since you've owned both. You know how on the iPhone you have to close the app you're currently in to reply to a text? Do you have to do that in Android or can you reply anywhere as if you have QuickReply for SMS on a jailbroken iPhone.

on galaxy s 2 you can just tap power button to make the screen dark then drag the ticker across to access SMS and then hold down home to bring up task manager and resume whatever you were doing

unless you can just drag the ticker across straight away, i am not sure

You can switch between programs on android and they keep running.

Miui OS has a quick reply thing for SMS where it fills half your screen when you get one, but I'm certain there's an app for that too for regular androids

Grab yourself an http://code.google.com/p/android-apktool/ and check the sources. I already did so for a few interesting APKs and they're all fine. I don't think that's possible for their kernel, but you don't need to use that.

inb4 too much effort. Not like you'd read the sources if they were available either.

Android = Better specs, faster system, phones usually have better camera function, can run emulators, better app selection and much, much more. Has Iris.
iPhone: Slower, alot more expensive for primarily for the name brand, vast app selection but almost all cost top dollar, can't allow user made/hacked apps. Slow. Has SIRI.

Yeah MIUI's nice but you gotta admit it's pretty suspicious. It's built almost entirely on open source code, but somehow it's distributed as a closed binary blob.

WTF is that? It's not the most ethical move and it suggests the developers aren't really interested in playing fair. You gotta wonder what they're up to.
