Sometimes, when I'm in a dark room or when I close my eyes and I focus really well on them, I see tiny red dots and small green blinking squares/rectangles around them... I wonder if this is normal or just one of my quirks.

Yes, it is. Don't worry. You have a vast array of edge detectors in your primary visual cortex and they LOVE seeing lines and angles. Areas V3-5 similarly like seeing detail in "color" data sent to them via other brain areas. The result is often colorful geometric patterns. It's all good.
