Topic: Am I the only person against drugs, alcohol, etc.?
Leonidas !nBpim1wazU started this discussion 15 years ago#1,516
Well I'm not so much against them as I just don't desire to take them myself and I'm opposed to anyone I care about doing them. Though if I don't care about someone, I could care less as long as I don't have to smell any second hand smoke.
I also am opposed to taking meds for purely psychological issues. Just psychological, not all brain stuff like seizures. Physical medical issues like diabetes, I am fine with though.
Does anyone else have similar views?
Oh and if you think I should be medicated, well in real life I am the dullest, normalest seeming person. It's only online that I share way too much that I seem crazy. The only way I don't seem normal is that around 2010 I lost the ability to smile. Well I can force the smile but I look in pain. Other than that I am so overly normal in real life so nobody's going to medicate me.

exactly. For instance, people assume that depression is synonymous with being sad about a particular issue, when in fact depression is usually a hereditary chemical imbalance.

When I was in the 8th grade there were two bullies beating me up for three months every day. So one day I stood up for myself and beat one of them up. During the fight well basically one thing I did was throwing a rock off the ground at the guy's head (not exactly but I'll simplify) and knocked him out. The school then twisted that into bringing a weapon to school and wanted to expell me so to avoid that I was declared ADD, put on ritalin and stayed in school.
Then the whole school were hypocrites scared of me, except for the bullies who then continued their shit but subtly until they got bored. I stopped taking it in the 9th grade, but the damage was done.
Ritalin made me focus better and do better at school, but paying attention was bad for me. It let all the psychological problems of life build up when I used to be able to forget about them when they want away, a live in the moment kind of thing.

The reason I don't do things like pot, alcohol, tobacco is:
* Smoking smells bad. That simple.
* They don't make useful drugs. It's the same old shit: pot, meth, LSD. If they sold the drug that Oliva Dunham from the TV show Fringe took as a kid in Dr. Bishop's secret experiment that gave her superpowers, then I'd try that but it's fictional.

People tend to become more than accustomed to the smell of their drug of choice. > * They don't make useful drugs. It's the same old shit: > pot
Use: entertainment. It makes everything more interesting and fun. > meth
It's useful for treating ADHD and Obesity, or at least that's what it can be prescribed for (U.S.). Obviously it allows people great energy, which is why it was prescribed to soldiers in the German military in WWII. > LSD.
Entertainment, and some would say "enlightenment"- it gives a different perspective on things.
These aren't great uses necessarily, but people do take drugs for many reasons not just euphoria.

Also they do make useful drugs. It's called amphetamine, which you could potentially get prescribed since you're ADD.
The most prolific and influential mathematician of recent times (Paul Erdos) took amphetamines daily. It helped him tremendously and he lived a long life too.

Yeah. I'd prefer for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4MAR to be available first though. No conclusive evidence of toxicity, or at least the toxicity is much less than meth/amphetamine. Plus it lasts longer and is also an entactogen rather than just a stimulant.

The common recreational drugs people take are cookie-cutter and cliche. If they were taking some new drug nobody ever heard of, it might make sense. But this is the same old shit. I feel for me to do it would be lame and when I care about someone else I want them to be better than this too. I haven't actually convinced anyone and I don't try hard either, but I might mention it once in a blue moon.

You keep skirting around the question.
I'm not asking how much you are against it, how you compare it to other drugs, why you don't smoke it personally, etc. I am asking why you are against it.
Why would you be against someone you care for to be smoking it? For health reasons? Nothing more than legal reasons?

When I'm sad most of the time for a year, I consider it depression.
People are not born depressed and I don't believe the chemical imbalance in the brain thing. Take someone always depressed, clone them and then raise the clone in some place like Amish, in a monastery, or that sort of thing where they won't see anything to give them unfullfilled desires and they won't be depressed.

I don't believe people are born to have chemical imabalances. I believe it's nurture rather than nature that causes them. I believe that drugs for personality issues are overprescribed.
If you think my views on this are odd, Scientology doesn't believe in drugs or psychotherapy.

No, Scientolgy has much more views than me. I think these "chemical imbalances" people claim are things we'll look back on as being some fiction and they're not really chemical imabalances that should be treated by drugs, but psychological issues that should be treated by means other than drugs (e.g. therapy, meditation, whatever). Drugs treat the symptom, not the cause.
Scientology opposes all psychology, not just drugs. That's the difference between me.

Sounds like you're the one trolling.
Am I the only one here who thinks if people have mental problems they shouldn't just be medicated and that's it?
In the old days, docs tried to cure people, not just funnel money into the pharmaceutical industry. And people weren't born with "chemical imbalances", they had some traumas in their life that their id, ego, and superego couldn't resolve. A lot of times various therapy didn't work. And things like shock therapy are considered barbaric now. So people figured it's easier to medicate people than to cure them.
Like ADD. So you can't focus? You take meds all your life for it? You know India has excercises for improving focus since at least 3000 years ago?
I don't believe in Scientology, but I do believe in alternative treatment like traditional Chinese medicine.
I know someone who is old and they had all these pains with all kinds of things wrong in their joints. More than arthritis. I don't remember exactly. It was a lot of things. They tried taking meds and it made them loopy. Instead they go to acupuncture. Yes I know not a cure, but it stops the pain for a week without the side effects of meds. And if you say it's a placebo, well it just disproves your theory that the brain has chemical imbalances in it that the brain itself cannot fix on its own.

Jump, you used to post how you're a pedophile and do psychotherapy to help you rather than chemical castration. That you believe being a pedophile is a mental delusion that can be overcome with insight rather than some chemical imbalance in the brain that is hopeless and you should take meds that kill your sex drive.

There never was a time "before drugs" in the first place.

> ... > > All psychological problems have a physical basis as we are made of physical things.
There we go something intelligent.
The thing is with the brain it's more of a chicken and egg thing. Chemicals alter the mind, but the mind itself alters what chemicals are produced. So the mind itself can have a trauma that gives it a chemical imbalance. The mind also could also have by itself producing the wrong chemicals and through a person training themselves, fix it so the chemicals are working right again.
Medicating everyone for mental problems is just a fad. A lot of therapists are against the idea and prefer people try psychotherapy instead of going straight for drugs. A lot of them will give people placebos instead of real drugs and then people's "chemical imbalances" fix themselves by the power of their own minds believing the placebos.
