My car fucked up and I need a new one, I'm looking at a 1995 BMW 316i with about 135K on the clock (recently serviced with new brakes). It's dirt cheap but I have never had a car with such high mileage. Having said this, I've seen Audis for sale with 200K+ on them. So what do? Are beamers reliable with this amount of miles? What is the safety like on old cars like this?

I bought an Audi with probably 200k on it, it wasn't any better. Except that it was $200. Every repair cost an astronomical amount. Too many things in them that can, and do, go wrong.

Audi had a problem making door handles that would stay attached to the latches at one time. Ignition module was $400 at the time (20 years ago) just for the part. The front differential was causing the car to yaw wildly to the right with any amount of torque. I did get $75 of ny $200 back from the junkyard in the end.
The engine was a really nice VW inline 5 cylinder that was bulletproof, though.
It did start nice when it was -20f, they still kept the battery under the back seat at the time. Pain in the ass to jumpstart, though.

What do you expect out of a 16 year old beemer? I'd be surprised if you could even make it from the seller to the repair shop. You'll spend more on towing than the car is worth, unless, do you have a tow rope and a brave friend with a working truck?

My other one was even worse. Worse in that repairs are stupd expensive for shit that on a honda would cost 1/10th the price to repair.

You must understand however, just because the motor and transmission have lasted this long doesn't mean all of your bushings and bearings for the steering/suspension components are in just as reliable shape. These parts have to be replaced eventually, you could dump twice what you paid for the car in just parts that wear out overtime in any car, regardless of make or model. High mileage cars are a gamble, sometimes you get a great car that was routinely maintained, sometimes you get a car that has been abused for years. Parts for European vehicles here in the states command a premium, especially salvaged parts in good condition.
