Topic: Nine reasons why I'd rather live in Russia than Michigan

HaikerensGuide !0VegJ9Jl.Q started this discussion 15 years ago #15,100

1. The unemployment rate is 6% as of now, compared to here where it's 10%
2. Internet piracy is completely legal
3. Codeine is available over the counter
4. There are far less blacks in Russia
5. There are more politically-agreeable people there than here where everyone is a fucking left-wing snob
6. I could literally take nude photos right now and not get in serious trouble
7. The government is less corrupt
8. There are more whites
9. I'll be with even more of my fellow skinheads

As someone who has lived in Russia since 2001, I can tell you unequivocally that you would not be welcome here, and with your attitude would not last 2 minutes. Yes, there is a Skinhead subculture...but they pretty much dwell in the same grim and miserable basement environment as Skinheads do in any country. Oh, and you seem to be labouring under the misapprehension that Russia is a bastion of the 'white' race (I'm assuming you're not including regions such as Bashkiri and Kamchatka in this, right? I mean, clearly you know about Russian's ethnic history).

My advice to you, assuming you are not trolling, is to look into the history of Russia before you consider moving here. You may be unpleasantly surprised by the number of Central Asian, Caucasian (I use that word not in the way you probably think it means) and...yes, shock horror, black people here. Keen Russian scholar that you are, I presume you know that Russia's greatest writer and father of the modern Russian language, Alexander Pushkin, hailed from Africa.

Ok, I'll leave you to your pithy 1-line butthurt replies. Do svidanya, durak.

I'm not depressed. I am quite optimistic about my future. I just see the time of me being in Michigan as a rite of passage -- a statement that I went through pure hell and lived to tell the tale.

@264,900 (HaikerensGuide !0VegJ9Jl.Q)

I don't doubt you know Michigan and Wayne County inside out. And I'm not suggesting you're wrong in your judgement of it. What I am saying is that you very obviously have no clue whatsoever about Russia. Only that. So before pining for it (and, specifically, for the reasons you have given - namely, to find a place where you can import your silly, ill-informed and racist ideas and find a group to latch on to), just be aware that Russia is nothing like you imagine it to be, and if you came to this country with that insular, angry, redneck village-boy mentality, you would be taken apart in minutes. Just believe me on that.

If, however, you are really not trolling and are serious about one day moving here, then I'll be happy to answer any questions you have. Though not now, it is late over here and I need to go to bed. I can answer them tomorrow however.

Oh, and just one final point before I go to bed: your first point is that Russia has a 6% unemployment rate. God only knows where you got this figure, but let me assume for a moment that it is remotely true. I am now sitting in an apartment on the outskirts of Pavlovsk, a town in the North West of Russia. It is almost 7:30am. From my window there are about 10 people shoveling snow off the paths. They are "employed" by the state. They receive around 2000 roubles a month for this work, equivalent to about 60 dollars a month. Call it 15 dollars a week. And again, for your own good, just trust me on this: they live in abject poverty. The absolute minimum wage needed to live like anything other than an animal in Russia is now about 40,000 roubles. Only about 10% of the working population make this wage.

But hey, the "unemployment" statistic looks really low, right?

Seriously, for your own good, really learn about things before you speak or write about them.

Lose the racism, you'll be absolutely fine. Russians like foreigners (especially Westerners) very much. But the racism will not fly here, because this is one of the most racially diverse nations in the world. You may find yourself in a bar espousing to some 'perfectly white' Russian the evils of black people....and then this Russian will turn around and tell you that his blood is a mixture of Tartar, Ukrainian, Mongol, Tadjik and Uzbek blood.

So yes, lose the racism, and you'll do fine. That, however, is a life rule, not just specific to Russia.

Most southerners are a mixture of Irish, Scottish, German, English, Italian and Amerindian blood, yet they're still racist as fuck. What you said makes little sense.

Hey, and please, less of this "even Russia" stuff - Russia is a troubled country, but magnificent in its way, with a very highly-cultured, respectful and proud population. If you want to find a comparison for where you live (which you say is a hell-hole), look to Romania or East Africa. Not Russia.

Then again, it may not, it seems I've been over-estimating both your age and intelligence. So let me walk you through this. If it helps you, say the words along with me. You ready? Ok, here we go:

Take a look at the nations you listed in your description of Southerners. Ok? You done that. Good. Now go find a map and locate them. For bonus points, trace the common blood-line. During your research you may come across terms such as Anglo-Saxon. Don't be phased by this. Just look them up in a dictionary.

Now, part 2: take a look at the nations which comprise Russia. And then the same basic thing, find a map, locate them, read a little about the racial discrepancy between them.

If you're in the mood, report back to us all what you've learnt.

Anyway, I'm done with you. Just please stay in America, it's a good place for you. You are obviously not so far above it as you seem to believe. Some self-awareness is needed on your part, but don't worry, that will come as you grow up.

Opyat', do svidanya.

By the way OP, it's not my intention to argue with you, I just want to set you straight on some massive and potentially dangerous misapprehensions you have about Russia.

Ok, you say you strongly dislike black people. This, I'm sure you realise deep down, is a daft thing to say. Maybe the black people near where you live are not pleasant to you (but then again, look at how you're coming across here - are you a paradigm of intelligent and reasonable humanity yourself?), but anyway, this is not the time or place to have an epic conversation about racism against black people. All I'll say (and forgive me if it sounds cliche) is that you won't rid yourself of hate by running away from the thing you hate. Just spend a little time analysing yourself. And yeah, by all means, leave your town to find a better life...but don't assume that it is a differently-coloured type f person which is the reason for all your unhappiness and frustration.

To Anon F, no, I haven't. Just since I left university in 2001. I studied Russian language and literature. Now I work for the British Council.

And Anon E - not the thread for you, bro. Take it somewhere else.

In St Petersburg and Moscow, tourism is becoming increasingly popular. Neither city is especially tourist friendly. Russia does not have a service industry comparable to Europe, and only in the centres of the cities will you find signs in English, things like that. Russia is not a relaxing place to visit, but it is a fascinating one. Just be aware that Moscow is officially the world's most expensive city, and semi-decent accommodation will cost you a fortune. If you don't mind roughing it, however, you can easily find somewhere cheap to stay.

As for crime - the rule is the same for anywhere in the world. Be smart and you'll be fine. Don't walk alone at night in the suburbs of Moscow especially. Don't get drunk and stagger around on the street - you'll be a target for police corruption. If you smoke, do not under any circumstances do it on Red Square - again, a hoard of police will descend on you demanding you pay a fine, the sum of which depends on the whim of the police officer. Keep a copy of your passport and visa with you at all times, but do NOT, ever, give your passport to a police officer asking to check your documents. He has no legal right to ask for your original passport, but often they intimidate foreigners into handing over their passports, at which point they'll saunter off with it, find some 'mistake' with your documents, and demand money from you to get it back.

In short, the main danger in Russia is the police. The common people are fine, friendly and helpful (and despise their own police as much as foreigners do). To be fair, the situation with the police is not nearly as bad as it was 10 years ago...but it is still pretty bad. I was stopped at Nevsky Prospect metro station last Saturday by 2 gorillas in uniform demanding to see my visa (they had heard me speaking English on my phone and took me for a tourist). When I responded to them in Russian and explained that I had lived here for 10 years (the implication being: don't fuck around with me buddy, I know how it works here), they left me alone. The point being - if you have any problems with the police, either tell them you're gonna call your Embassy, or (the surest way to make them fuck off) ask to speak to their chief, whilst making a theatrical show of memorizing the ID number on their jackets.

Organised crime is obviously a problem in Russia, but this will not affect a tourist in any way, EXCEPT if you're stupid enough to pick up a prostitute and take her back to your hotel/apartment. She'll be accompanied by 2 heavies, who will 'check' your apartment to make sure you're alone there and not about to gang rape the girl. There have been stories of guys who have drunkenly picked up a Russian hooker from the street...and the guys have disappeared.

So, be smart, and come with the right attitude - i.e, to see and explore an incredible nation. Don't come for the stereotype of cheap alcohol and easy women, because neither of those things are true, except in the smaller cities of Siberia, where I'm pretty sure you're not intending to go.

Good luck!

Nope, I'm not interested in either women or booze, and I don't smoke, so I'm sweet. Thanks for the tips, hopefully I'll go alright. What are the scenics like? I probably won't spend much time in the cities, in all honesty. I've just always liked Russia. Dat snow, yknow?
