Obviously I'll be converting to mp3 for playback in my phone, but I'm wondering if it's worth the hassle of burning the collection to flac? I'll be throwing the CD's away after this.
I only ask because an engineer friend of mine tells me mp3 is only acceptable to us because we're playing it on crap gear. He claims the hardware will improve a lot in the next couple of years and consequently higher quality formats will be preferred. But we're still going to need compression aren't we? I'm skeptical of whether or not ogg and aac offer big enough leaps in quality to undermine the first mover advantage of mp3.

I've been hearing about flac being the future for about 10 years now lol. I wouldn't stress on it too much, unless you've got some incredibly difficult to find music.

I decided to rip the important shit (imports, classical, major artists, etc.) to flac and everything else to 256 variable bit rate mp3.
It's slick as shit to convert flac to mp3 in ubuntu. Considering it's not possible to go the other way, there's some things I want left intact.

Well after doing quite a few disks, it turns out it literally takes no more time to burn to flac then to mp3. The flac files are a about 3x the size of mp3's, but I've got a tetra-byte hard disk and I'm not planning to share them so that doesn't really matter to me.
The only hassle is I now have to convert flac to mp3 for device-based playback. That takes 10 minutes or so to fill an entire 4gb flash drive. But I decided it's worth it since flac gives me the most options of any format. Seems you can convert from flac to any other format, even wav, without fucking up quality. Even though I'm sure my speakers aren't good enough to project the differences, the format itself seems legit.

And yes, flac is legit. It's not a lossy-compression algorithm so the quality stays 100% instact whereas mp3 does tricks to blend sounds to eachother to produce less variance or some shit so it can reduce teh size. You only hear this difference with very good ears and very good hardware.
