Unity here to stay, Gnome 3.2, cloud storage service, and we're headed back to Rhythmbox for the moment is the word on the net.
On the down side:
Thousands of computer users who know only that they must have the latest release of everything are busy downloading it now. They are busy clicking frantically past the cautions and recommendations that the upcoming release is targeted at testers and developers. In the coming months, we can look forward to a fresh new batch of clueless people complaining about how the bleeding edge shit doesn't work for them.

Banshee is slow as fuck to open and navigate through the collection, so I understand the need to change. But going back to Rythymbox? What is this 2008?
I hate how dedicated to using only GTK apps Ubuntu has been. VLC is easily the best movie player that's ever been coded, but we can't get that as the default cause it's QT. K3B is better than Brasero, and Cleminine and Amarok are better than Rythymbox.
I know in the past this all had to do with keeping the install image small enough to fit on a CD, but those days are behind us now so what's the problem? I just don't get it.

Truth be told, from a developers' perspective, VLC is a critically important piece of software because it's one of the first highly portable apps that actually fucking works.
The rest of the open source world would be wise to take the fucking hint. Modular design is cool, fragmentation isn't.

Exactly. It's only the interface that sucks, and that's only cause it's so fucking old-school. But if it was the default in Ubuntu then Canonical would make a decent skins and plug-ins for it instead of the shit we have from 14 year old amateurs.

Uh, no, VLC performs poorly compared to alternatives like MPC-HC and MPlayer (+ frontend).
Besides, if Canonical developed their own interface for VLC, it would be some stupid Unity-only shit.

Do you actually USE software of do you just read comments from Reddit. MPC-HC may have better rendering, but it crashes all the time on a good percentage of systems.

I've seen comments about it everywhere, and it was just as bad as when I tried it; indeed, blocky graphical glitches were annoyingly frequent. I was skeptical, but I have few other conclusions to make.
