Topic: Did Alan Carr's book on how to give up smoking actually work for anyone here?

Anonymous A started this discussion 15 years ago #14,766

I really want and need to stop smoking, but that book, with it's obvious hypnotic techniques and pseudo-psychology just didn't work for me, in fact I ended up smoking even more. And yet I read on Amazon than practically everyone who read it gave up. What am I missing? Am I just not as suggestible as most people?

Failing that book, anyone have advice for a heavy smoker (very heavy smoker - 30 Marlboro Reds a day) who is sick of smoking but can't seem to give up?

The most effective techniques I've heard repeatedly from successful quitters is cold turkey and a medicine called Chantix.

I haven't tried the medicine yet, but I've failed cold turkey around a dozen times.

Chantix is an anti-depressant. I have tried the patch and the gum. The best way to quit? Having the will to.

I quit with the patch. worked pretty well, actually. But, i started dating a chick 6 months later who smoked, and so now I smoke again. But i did quit after 10 years for a total of 6 months, which wasn't bad. I'd still be quit if not for my love of smoking women.

It may have some of those chemicals in it, but read the link I posted. I've known 4 quitters that used Chantix successfully.

I quit 3 days ago cold turkey. All you need is to want to quit, and a good reason for it too.

Not official until the 30 day mark or so. Good luck. ;)

I know of one. Also:
> Chantix patients have reported a variety of side effects including nausea, headache, sleep difficulties (insomnia, vivid or strange dreams), constipation and gas. If these symptoms persist or if they bother you, let you doctor know.

> Other more serious side effects such as suicidal thoughts, depression and behavioral changes have been reported as well.

So I may be suicidal and gassy, but I wont be smoking...

First off, come to the realization that there is no such thing as a "miracle cure" for addiction nor is there any product on the market that will eliminate your cravings. It all comes down to willpower. Start counting every cigarette you smoke, daily. Find the price of each cigarette you smoke. Start adding it up, after a while you will start to notice how much money you are wasting on smoking. Every week try to remove just one cigarette from the previous week. When you feel stressed out or having a craving, find something to occupy yourself. Chew some gum, chew on a pen/pencil, play with a stress ball, buy some bubble wrap. Go as long as you can without reaching for a cigarette.

All the users of Chantix I talked to mentioned crazy ass dreams... those side effects seem like a small price to pay for quitting, it's not like you have to take Chantix forever.

Yeah, you're right, but honestly it seems like the first day was the hardest. It was fucking torturous. So yeah, I think I'll be fine as long as I continue to desire not having smoking as a habit in my life.

I usually do well until I decide to go drinking with buddies that still smoke.

I always smoked a lot more when I drank. I kicked drinking fairly easy, but I avoided alcohol and friends that drink, I still do or I'll convince myself to have 'just one' and end up on a 30 day binge. I went on a 2 month binge once, so derpy.

I like drinking though I moderate myself really well. Family has a history of alcoholism so I only do in social situations. I find it easier to not smoke when you're around an attractive girl that doesn't.

Wonderful advice.

Before you decide to quit, come to terms with the fact that it is going to suck. It's not going to be pleasant. It's not going to be easy. It's going to be a painful mass of suck and craving after craving. Just own it and deal with it as it comes along.

After that it's just willpower -actual sustained willpower, not powerful momentary urges. Try to keep busy and not think about smoking too much. You might break down and have a cigarette at some point. Expect that too, but try to make that a momentary stumble rather than an excuse to quit trying. If you want to stop, you will find a way to work through the cravings and relapses.
