I apologize if I already started this thread but I don't remember.
My budget is about 2k, possibly a little more, but I need to save up for other things like first months rent, food, and occasional trips to dennys or something, I don't know. I'm hoping to get a new job and moving out in the spring but we'll see. If I don't, I'll swallow my tears and keep saving for other things.
I don't care if it's a piece of shit, it just needs to be reliable and Japanese. And it can't be horribly ugly I guess.
Just something I won't have to bring to the mechanic all the time.

It would be wise to avoid a rebuilt unit if you have never worked with the shop. I have a distrust of franchise auto shops. I've heard horror stories of shops bending steel separators and friction plates in automatic transmissions instead of replacing the clutch pack. The transmission will go a few thousand, then its back in the shop for a new transmission. I am not saying avoid a rebuilt unit, I am saying be very wary of one.

Don't buy into the belief that Japanese cars = reliable cars. Get the idea out of your head before you go headfirst into the market. Japanese cars break down just as much as any other car, trust me. Get a subscription to CarFax, 10 reports for 50 bucks is a wise investment. An accident history and I would walk away. I am not familiar with California law regarding smog but I can assure you, smog equipment is incredibly expensive. If the tires are new the owner is probably trying to hide an alignment problem. Get under the car, look for any leaks, if the undercarriage seems unusually clean, the owner is probably trying to hide a small leak somewhere. Whenever I look at a used car, for some reason I always look for the valve stem caps, I feel that a meticulous owner will always replace his/her caps and a lazy owner will lose them or forget about them.

When a used vehicle is sold in California, the seller is legally responsible for making sure that the vehicle's smog control equipment complies with state requirements. There is no provision in the law allowing a seller to sell a vehicle "as is." The buyer must submit the smog certificate to the Department of Motor Vehicles when transferring registration of the vehicle. Without the smog certificate, the transfer of ownership cannot be completed.
In private party transactions, the seller must provide the buyer with a proof of smog certification prior to the transfer of ownership.
