I won't eat it, but I think it's a good thing that it's available again. Most of it's going to pet food or export, there's not much market here for human consumption.

It was a terrible problem in the horse industry for the few years the ban was lifted, and there are a lot of things worse than death. There was simply no outlet for unwanted horses, rescues couldn't take on any more, nobody could. Just too many horses and they got abandoned, starved. You could still get them shipped to Canada or Mexico for slaughter, but the cost of transportation was a problem.

Unintended consequences of well-intentioned lobbying. Animal rights people rarely think things through, though.

People give horses away all the time. The fact that one can get a good supply of meat for free now is a very good thing, even if said meat is lower quality than beef.

I found a horsemeat only fast food place in Zagreb, ate a horseburger and a horsedog hahaha... it's actually pretty delicious meat.

There's nothing unusual or lolamerica about finding it offensive to eat certain animals that have cultural significance as companions. There are all sorts of laws banning species-specific slaughter in other countries.

It's one thing when let's say religion stops you from eating certain species... then I laugh even harder...
But a nation wide ban cause they are purdy horsies and have cultural significance as companions... LOL...
