I won't eat it, but I think it's a good thing that it's available again. Most of it's going to pet food or export, there's not much market here for human consumption.
It was a terrible problem in the horse industry for the few years the ban was lifted, and there are a lot of things worse than death. There was simply no outlet for unwanted horses, rescues couldn't take on any more, nobody could. Just too many horses and they got abandoned, starved. You could still get them shipped to Canada or Mexico for slaughter, but the cost of transportation was a problem.
Unintended consequences of well-intentioned lobbying. Animal rights people rarely think things through, though.

People give horses away all the time. The fact that one can get a good supply of meat for free now is a very good thing, even if said meat is lower quality than beef.

They're emotional people. They aren't known for rational thinking. Any time legislature is pushed through for emotional reasons, it blows up in people's faces.

And you can bet the legislation was pushed as "If you oppose this you must hate horses!"

It has less fat compared to other meat (besides chicken) so it would be a good choice.
Makes me wanna go grab a horseburger now.

There's nothing unusual or lolamerica about finding it offensive to eat certain animals that have cultural significance as companions. There are all sorts of laws banning species-specific slaughter in other countries.
You're as bad as Squared with the US shit.

It's one thing when let's say religion stops you from eating certain species... then I laugh even harder...
But a nation wide ban cause they are purdy horsies and have cultural significance as companions... LOL...
Also, don't judge me like I mock the US only... I mock every nation equally since I find patriotism hilarious and love seeing the butthurt it causes.

You're doing the squared shit right now! Just because other countries do it, doesn't excuse the USA's irrational detestation of horse meat.

It is more useful to eat horses than for them to starve to death.

I agree. I wouldn't eat horse meat myself, but I won't tell other people what to eat (unless it's endangered).
