It makes perfect sense - code an operating system with tons of promise and enticing features (free, open-source, customizable) and make it look fully-functional, but only make it half-functional. It causes wannabe-nerds hours of frustration as they try to get it working, and even when they do no software exists to run.

Of course it's a troll. To have any measure of success, Linux needs to go viral. It's not going to be advertised and marketed because there's no mechanism for recouping such expenses. Hardware makers can't really get behind it for fear of pissing off MS. So, we have a hack of trolls or maybe a troll of hacks. Either way, Linux is really only for hackers who know enough to get it working well. And trolling is how it grows.
The world will change eventually, the best developers know it and that's why they've been leaving MS in droves. But it won't be until hardware makers wake up and realize there's money to be made selling hardware with 'free' software pre-installed and pre-configured. Many believe Android is a catalyst for this. But I think we're still a good decade away from free software domination.

Well that's why Ubuntu is number one. As fragmented as it is, it's still the least offensive of the bunch. Trouble with Ubuntu is they always release several months before it's ready. They haven't really released a finished product since 8.04.

Ubuntu wants to be like a BMW.
Pros: Looks so awesome. Fun to drive at full speed. People see you using it and assume you have some kind of important exclusive job.
Cons: Breaks down all the time. Once it's been broken will never operate at full speed again. Is a lot more expensive than it appears on the surface.
BTW, Arch Linux is best linux because it's what Linux was designed to be: a system the user puts together themselves, customized to the hardware and user in question.

Of course it matters. In one case a corporation assumes responsibility and fails. In the other you assume responsibility and fail. It's a big fucking difference if you think about it.
