Topic: Growing mushrooms for research purposes at home

Image went missingLike the title says, this is strictly for research only. A friend of mine successfully grew about 60 and we have been researching them in depth. I decided to try a different strain for research myself.

did some of those with a friend. He grew them, I've only grown weed. But, they were very good. Just gotta be sterile as fuck with it he said.

A tote, LED light once the cakes are ready, heating pad hooked to a timer, and a temperature/humidity gauge. It looks cheap, but my friend was able to grow those 60 (with new ones pinning from the spore prints) with less.

injecting spores... genius!

the only spores i can get are prints on a card, so it would be harder to keep the strate sterile.

Sterilization is key. I cleaned out my guest bedroom and sterilized the shit out of it just for this. I may start a second tote soon. Wish me luck!

It's a clear plastic tote. The holes are for fresh air. I have an aquarium air pump to control the humidity inside along with pushing the stale air out.

Neither had I until I found it here. http://azarius.net/smartshop/magic-mushrooms/spores-cubensis/psilocybe_cubensis_z-strain/

> This was a novelty strain bred by an unknown source. Z-strain is a very aggressive colonizer and one of the fastest strains from inoculation to harvest available. This probably explains why this is such a popular strain among cultivators.

You're going to want to monitor them very carefully. I would recommend that you ask your friend for any literature he may know of to help accomodate you. Since you are growing a fungus you have to be very careful that you aren't going to also grow mold on it and contaminate your desired result. It's something you're going to want to look at very carefully probably every 12 hours or as often as possible. It's very easy to destroy your progress with carelessness.

Other than that, it sounds like you have a pretty good set up. Good luck!

Yeah. He had some difficulty with mold on his first few cakes. We sorted it out, and he's growing LAMF now. I work with him 40 hours a week, so his knowledge will be readily available. I've worked in greenhouses for years, so I know a thing or two about monitoring temperature, humidity, PH, whathaveyou.

It's a mix of brown rice-flour, vermiculite, and ground millet. When the cakes colonize with micellium(?) They'll go into perlite.

Sounds like a good base. If you ever bother to transfer more to new jars always be sure you autoclave everything first, but I'm sure you already know that. I'd be cautious about what kind of water you are using for your boiling, but so long as you aren't mixing it often you should be okay overall anyway.

Let us know how the results are, man. Do you plan on ingesting them or is this just to see what happens?

Fats !lbanned8o6 (OP) replied with this 15 years ago, 2 minutes later, 20 minutes after the original post[^] [v] #254,591

@previous (Fuchs !!4KU9PSdLG)
Oh I plan on ingesting them with gusto. I've been using distilled water for everything as I was told on shroomery and erowid. Some of the growers use lake water, but I don't trust the bacteria of Florida's water enough to do that.

Will update as things begin to grow (hopefully)

Fuchs !!4KU9PSdLG replied with this 15 years ago, 4 minutes later, 24 minutes after the original post[^] [v] #254,593

@previous (Fats !lbanned8o6)
Erowid is generally a good source. Also yeah, you are wiser to not use lake water considering how many contaminants exist in it. Avoid that idea like the plague.

What temperature are you keeping them at?

Ks !KansasxqvM joined in and replied with this 15 years ago, 2 minutes later, 27 minutes after the original post[^] [v] #254,597

> pints

Use quarts with bidrseed noc those... wait and noc pasteurized coco coir with your colonized quarts into a large storage tote. Its pretty exciting stuff, but pints are so much a waste of time in comparison with bulk methods. Bulk is just as easy as pints... basically except you get 1/2 or 1 lb instead of an oz. Fuchs is dead on about contamination, mold spores travel by the millions and can be an asspain to get rid of, don't check too often though or you actually increase the risk.

Fats !lbanned8o6 (OP) replied with this 15 years ago, 34 seconds later, 27 minutes after the original post[^] [v] #254,599

@254,593 (Fuchs !!4KU9PSdLG)
I'm keeping them between 82-85. Humidity isn't an issue until the cakes come out of the jars. I've got the heating pad hooked to an automatic timer. 30 min on, 30 min off. It's maintaining about 83 atm. I'll have to monitor it at least twice daily, though.

The lake water thing was for rehydrating the cakes come to think of it. I still smelled a troll with that suggestion though.

Not of the jar 0_0 lol. At any point during the process even (after birthing) avoid over-checking, swishing air around etc. Just let them do their thing, check every 10 days or so. When you noc bulk you can't check for 30 days, no matter how bad you want to.

I haven't done pints since I was a teen, but I remember spraying them so... yeah you have to do that, but leave them alone besides necessary stuffs.

This is what I meant. When I said "Check them every 12 hours or as often as possible" I meant that if you are using glass or plastic, just observe them from the outside in. You want to see if coloration changes drastically or if there are obvious mold spots growing. You wouldn't ever want to actually remove the lid. That doesn't even take a minute to just casually observe how your growth is managing.

Gotcha. I didn't plan on removing the lids of the jars lolol. If I can successfully do this, I plan on moving up to quart jars, or just investing in an old deep-freezer that I can sanitize and do some serious cultivating with.

Casing is barely more difficult than what you're doing now with like 100x more reward. Spores, birdseed, coco coir, vermiculite, patience and sterility.

A deep freezer would be a pain in the ass. Big storage totes are cheap, easy and effective. Research casing, shroomery has a sub-forum for it in the cultivation section IIRC. Hypothetically a guy could do a dozen or so good casings and have enough for a lifetime. I may or may not be speaking from experience.

I don't know but I'm definitely going to grow some now. Haven't done it since college and I really miss it. It's just never convenient for me. I don't like tripping alone and I very much prefer weed or Ecstasy for sex.

Call me old fashioned, but I feel sex on shrooms cheapens the spiritual experience and sex is just weird all around.

So tell me, where can a dude in his early 30's find some good trip buddies?
