Topic: The whole 'happy holidays' vs. 'merry Christmas' debacle.

Anonymous A started this discussion 15 years ago #14,347

Which do you generally say? Do you get offended if someone says the one you don't prefer?

Also, do you think the 'It's merry Christmas, not happy holidays' folks actually care about the whole issue of 'not caring if they offend people', or if they just want their holiday to take precedence? I saw something about growing balls and saying merry christmas regardless of offense that may come from it, but it didn't mention anything about growing balls and saying happy hanukkah. If they're so against Happy Holidays, why solely argue for Merry Christmas? Why not fight for all religious holiday greetings to be spoken?

I just say merry christmas. It's never been an issue around here before.

I prefer to be honest, wishing everyone a "happy buy shit for people you don't really like day."

But Christmas is pretty far removed from being a "religious" holiday for most people anymore. It's just a cultural thing, one that almost everyone recognizes in some way. I think you have to be trying to get offended by people saying it.

Neither offend me. I personally use merry Christmas, but if someone wants to say happy holidays or something else, I'm not bothered.

The entire thing came about as an exaggeration which left out reasonable parts and blew up the unreasonable-sounding parts. It's like that woman who sued mcdonalds for spilling coffee on herself. Sounds silly until you look into it.
