Topic: I had to listen to a big talk about why I need to find god.

stickybuns !bENfolDsOU started this discussion 15 years ago #14,226

Somehow church got brought up, and I said I didn't go. They asked my religion, I said I wasn't religious.

Suddenly, I'm getting asked to attend church and if I am scared of going to hell. Then Pascal's Wager comes up. Then 'where did you come from?'. Followed by a big talk about why faith is amazing and necessary.

THEN they got over mr. Charisma, who gave a twenty minute speech on catholicism and faith. He went on about how he believes in science like the big bang, but he still has faith and blah blah blah. All about how church doctrine never changes and such. Then he goes on about how I'm probably atheist because I'm intelligent, and I overthink it (wat)

I was cornered on a sofa. It was uncomfortable.

If they pull you aside again, bring up a fallacy like mankind being descended from two people would lead to massive inbreeding. Maybe their heads will explode or something.

It wasn't as bad as it could have been. When I said I didn't want to go to church with them, they pretty much dropped it and such. And they weren't all 'You're damned to hell heathen scum'. they were civil.

> Then he goes on about how I'm probably atheist because I'm intelligent, and I overthink it

I didn't understand what he was going for with that. To me, it seemed a bit patronising. He said it wasn't meant to be. It seemed to me like a compliment, almost. And it seemed ridiculous that he was saying I was an atheist because I'm smart. It didn't seem like a negative thing on me O_o

Tell them that religion prevents you from going to prostitutes, polluting your body with drugs and alcohol, and enjoying sundays. Then, ask them a bunch of heretical and blasphemous questions such as, "why is god such a dick to fags and poor people", or "jesus liked prostitutes too! He loved them!"

Or ask them why they think the most powerful being in the universe needs stupid, nosy, idiots to be his mouthpiece.

That should shut them up.

Solid plan.

Also, one of them made the argument that god doesn't just come out and show himself because faith helps him find the people who truly believe/worship, not those that just say they do.
But um...why? If he just came out and proved his existence, then everyone would truly believe and he would have to send far fewer people to hell. He's willfully keeping himself hidden, according to their argument, to see who believes in him with no proof. Which seems a bit off, in my opinion.

Also, one of them said there was scientific evidence for Christianity but then they looked a bit uncomfortable when I asked for examples.

yeah, well, look, they (religious folks, especially christians) will push their beliefs on others hard-core. Why? Because it gives them license to judge, even though they are not supposed to be the judge of anyone. But, if you're diametrically opposed to their beliefs then they can pretty much look the other way on the whole "loving thy neighbor" business and being non-judgemental. They've decided that your soul needs saving and that's way more important than obeying one silly little thing jesus said.

You either have to put it very concretely to them, and if they won't let you talk then you have to bully your opinion to them: You're an adult and you've been fed this same line for X number of years, fuck off, I didn't believe it then, I don't believe it now, and I won't believe it in the future. Nothing you can say can change that, I've made up my mind and I'm not interested in discussing this if you don't respect my beliefs the same way I respect yours. I'm not going to try and turn you atheist, I have no interest in "corrupting your soul," I want to keep my beliefs to myself and I want you to keep your beliefs to yourself.

Get it? Now if you continue and make me repeat myself I'm going to be angry, and maybe I will try and share my beliefs with you. Would you like that? For me to brow beat you with condescension and pedantic arguing? Do you want me to try and make you question your faith? Do you really want me to? because I'll tell you something right now, regardless of what else is said I'm walking out of here with my beliefs intact. You want to see if you can to?

You stood your ground. Overwhelming peer pressure is a tactic that is actually employed by Christians in the us (evangelicals mostly). You were lucky in that they will often say "well, I don't think I could be friends with anyone who doesnt believe in Christ."

It's not easy for someone your age to face up to that kind of social pressure. You arent the sticky buns who needed people to talk him through a conversation through a girl.

Also, I see why you want to move to England. There are places in the US where people aren't like that, though.

Head west or east. Get out, son. You aren't among your equals. You need to find better stock.

Image went missingPeer pressure can be a difficult thing to deal with. All through your teen years, and even into your adult life, people who have made bad choices may try to talk you into making the same choices. These people may be classmates, friends, or relatives you trust. The important thing is that you don't let yourself be drawn into making the same bad choices these people have made. You're smarter and better than that. Don't be afraid.

I used to always wonder how people got pressured in to things. I had never really experienced it. I totally understand now, though, as it gets very uncomfortable when you're the only one not doing/believing something.

And, even if I don't end up moving to England (right away), I'm going to go to college somewhere far away out west or up north (or even in Canada).

Also, I've gotten better at talking to people in general. I feel completely different than I did back when I was even more pathetic. I'm getting more social.

Oh, I was told that I'm going to hell for being an atheist and being pro-gay rights from a person who talks almost exclusively about hating jews and nazism. Which I found odd.

This was from someone different than in the OP.

I kinda want to start a propaganda campaign for atheism. You know, stand outside of churches on the side walk (public property) and pass out pamphlets on atheism to people.

Go stand outside of churches with big signs and yell at people about how they are not really going to hell.

Have you ever had any arguments or debates with them? I'm guessing they're fairly militant Christians if they're out protesting.
