Presented to North Korea as a token of friendship in those less geopolitically tense times, it was meant to symbolise wisdom, love, justice and peace and engineered to come into flower in February, coinciding with Kim's birthday.
Since then, growing Kimjongilia has become a symbol of North Koreans' support for their leader and, 15 years ago, the Korean Kimilsungia-Kimjingilia Committee first staged a festival in honour of the flower, as well as another species of flower named after Kim Il-Sung.
According to the Korean Central News Agency, preparations for the festival are "at their final phase" - despite an unusual spell of cold weather - and the Pyongyang venue for the main event is ready.
The theme of this year's festival is "February, when Kimjongilias are in full bloom, is the spring for all people to sing the praises of Kim Jong-Il," KCNA reported.
"Service personnel of the Korean People's Army and officials of the Ministry of People's Security have thousands of potted Kimjongilias ready for display."

DMs posts have made me feel for the people of NK.
Are there any groups i can join or donate to that help the people? Like give vaccines and such? I cant imagine what it's like to live in such a place. I watched a documentary with Lisa ling going into NK with an eye doctor and the people really were crazy for Kim.
I don't like Lisa Ling though. She has zero concern for people she talks to. I remember she did a piece or channel 1 news when I was in sixth grade where a man risked his life to show her some shit going down in his country. He probably didn't know the only people watching were a bunch of kids.
I bet she fucks like crazy though.
Anyway, she asked them if the Dear Leader could ever be wrong. They just looked at her, at first I thought they were terrified someone would ask that question, but they were really just confused about what she was asking. They couldn't even comprehend the question. The escorts didn't shut things down or get angry like they did for other small things. It is scary to see such a large scale brainwashing.
I don't know how much they believe and how sincere they are, but they are conditioned amazingly well.
