Barring deep trauma and overprescription, you have a lot of selfish party types and self-medicators. They feel like sobriety absolves them of all the horrible shit they did. They’re born anew. But they’re often still manipulative, selfish, and abusive.
I remember video of my cousin kicking out his junkie fiancée. She hurt herself and called the cops. The cops saw the footage and still wanted to arrest him for DV. He said they had no grounds for arrest and bid them GTFO. Soon after, she stole money, left rehab and tried to burglarize his place. Finally, he dropped her off at some urban drug area.

I mean just think about living as a drug addict. You're depressed and want to kill yourself so you try some drugs and suddenly feel alive again so you start using it regularly. Eventually you can't feel normal without it but people talk shit about you and nag you to stop using the one thing keeping you from feeling like dogshit. So you start pushing back and nitpicking what they do or just start lying to them to get them off your back. You act like that for long enough and eventually it becomes your normal mode of operation. Maybe you run into money problems because you're using so much so you resort to drastic actions like stealing from people you know because they'd never understand if you just asked them no they'd never get it. You NEED this stuff to just exist and besides they won't miss a few hundred bucks anyway it'll be fine, right?

Exactly. They become lifelong experts at deflection and rationalization.
