I’m going to go out on a limb here with intel and say if a company loses 10% in one day, that’s something. If a company loses 10% in one day in two days straight, maybe that’s an existential risk to the long term survival of that company.

Well, it’s two things from what I understand: Elon Musk is in trouble so his companies are down, and some Democrats were campaigning on the idea of a moratorium on the construction of data centers. (The United States has 75% of the world’s processing power despite having only 4% of the population). There’s been populist sentiment against data centers because it’s a symbol of corporate greed, basically. On more than one level.
Remains to be seen whether the democrats actually pass any concrete anti data centers legislation, but the fact that the markets are pricing it in preemptively is noteworthy.

Also democrats have 28 out of 50 governors after these midterms. They’re leading in two more races that haven’t been called yet. So since 50 is half of 100 that means 56% to 60% of states will have democrats as governors, so if there are anti data centers regulations it would happen at the state and the federal level which makes it much more difficult to continue the AI buildout (if they do anything). But the markets are based on expectations, so in a way, it matters more if people think the democrats will do something rather than if they actually do.

Some of the more far left people like Bernie Sanders have been particularly anti data center. He said he wants to use the federal government to completely pause frontier AI research.
