It's 'private message' (PM) and always has been on Minichan (and Tinychan, AnonTalk, ATBBS.org, Psychtalkonline, OtakuTalk, Laghouls, Scatchan, Bitsytalk, etc.), and every flavour of ATBBS/TinyBBS/MiniBBS - as well as BBSoup and AnonBBS (the dead software of AuthorizedClone and to4str respectively). I've never seen any clone using 'personal message' or 'direct message'.

I think Twitter popularised it in the early 2010s (AnonTalk was founded in 2008) and then other platforms joined in, and now everyone younger says DMs instead of PMs. Early forums and BBSes, IRC, social networks, instant messengers, etc. never used anything except PM (private message) until recently.
