They are both Federations. But the USA and Australia are one nation. The EU is many nations, unifying as one state.

A nation is a group of people, like an ethnicity, that share a common history, language, culture, etc.
A state is an organization with territory, a government, a leader, military, currency, etc.
Some nations have multiple states, and some have none. Tibet for example is a nation without a state.
France is a nation and state, as is Germany, and the UK. They are unifying their states into one (the EU), but will remain seperate nations with distinct cultures and languages.

A federation is multiple states that have a Federal government that overlaps them all. In the US all states have a constitution and government, senate, governor, legislature, National Guard (who serves the governer before the president), and territory. But a Federal government exists that authority in all the states.
The EU has several member states who are slowly giving power to the EU, which many call a Federal government, but officially denies this.
A union is essentially a less official term for a federation.
