Topic: How long do you think modern civilization will last?

Do you think we’re just going to experience ever advancing technology and progress, or do you think there’s a chance things could be reset to less advanced stage due to some catastrophic event?

I think that at some point there will be some economic crisis which pushes back the standard of living we have become accustomed to, but not as far back as you might think.

I hope it’ll be like 70’s, maybe 80’s.

I mean we'd have to lose a lot of knowledge and that's much harder these days than back then. You'd have to probably take down the internet, burn a good amount of libraries, kill lots of professors/scientists, and generally destroy relations between most advanced civilizations. That's all possible in some massive world war but probably unlikely. I think the bigger threat is just losing our current quality of life because of robots and AI. So society would still be advanced but you (not of noble birth) wouldn't get those comforts and would probably live in a pod and work 12 hours a day.

If you could break enough nodes in the network for power, transportation, and logistics you could set things back. But it would have to be truly calamitous. I don’t believe there’s starting from zero. All the surface metals have been mined so there would be step functions to rekindle advanced civilization.

Maybe for a few months or at best a few years. Countries can get that stuff back up fairly quickly if they really want to
