Stupid campaign. Paulus was unfit to command, and should have defied orders. At minimum he needed a ready reserve of seasoned German troops, rather than surrounding his forces with weak and ill-equipped Italian, Hungarian, and Romanian armies. Had he broken out his forces could have joined Mannstein’s. I don’t believe they would have won back territory. But it would have been a nasty defensive campaign against the Soviets.
