Topic: A Chinese guy pointed this out to me

People say that Europe is western and Africa is not.

Has anybody noticed how this doesn’t make any sense?

Black logic.

Most of Europe isn’t even in the western hemisphere and Africa extends farther west than Europe does.

African culture is distinct.

Yeah, but like, why is Europe western if it’s just north though? Wouldn’t it make sense to say Africa isn’t northwestern, but it is western, just southwestern?

"Western" and "Eastern" is more cultural than geographic.

But isn’t that kind of dumb though? If you’re talking about Europeans, why not just say culturally European instead of pretending Australia is western.

Then it gets even weirder when people start talking about ideological alignments. Like when somebody says that Japan is pro western and part of the western alliance. Idk, maybe I’m just nitpicking but I don’t really like how vague it is and how it seems like a euphemism for white people. Like we can’t just say we support European aligned countries because that sounds racist so we have to call it the western alliance like we’re just a bunch of people who support a direction instead of people who support a place.

I’m not even convinced that’s true though. In all of history, is democracy even an exclusively western idea? Before World War One, weren’t most European countries monarchies?

Idk, I just feel like it’s more straightforward to say, "I support the United States, the European Union, and NATO." Because that’s really what we mean when we say "western" 99% of the time we’re not talking about South America.

The world's only pure democracy -- ancient Athens -- was Eastern in culture.

…not even sure if we’re taking about Canada these days …or Europe. So there’s a difference between American western and European western, American western means the United States, European western means the EU. Sort of. Until the next election then it might change back.

But then even that’s controversial if you think about it, because usually the dividing line between Europe and Asia is Istanbul, so Greece is considered European.

Then Russia is a whole thing, they’re anti western, so they’re eastern, but they racially identify as European and get offended if you call them Asian even though most of their country is in Asia, but they love China so it’s like… it’s a whole thing.

Although I’m pretty sure some Russians are Asian, I’ve definitely seen Asian looking Russians before.
