Now in this case the kid had uncontrollable seizures and other medical complications but I really wonder how this kind of policy will play out. You think we'll see a resurgence in the Eugenics movement? I guess my stance on it is I don’t think we should kill people and I don’t think we should try to make "superior" people. I think we should leave genetic research at disease prevention. For instance, if you could modify somebody’s DNA to prevent them from dying from cancer, that’s ok with me. But if you’re trying to make them taller or smarter or more attractive or something, genes aren’t simple and one gene can affect multiple different things, so there are probably tradeoffs we’re unaware of. For a long time they used to think most of our DNA was junk because it doesn’t encode proteins. Now it’s not so clear because some of it actually turns other genes on or off in certain situations. My opinion is that probably most of our DNA does something even if we don’t understand it.

In terms of euthanasia though, children can’t consent. We can have a debate about adults. Also it’s not like anybody remembers being 1 or 2. They circumcise babies without any anesthesia and nobody remembers it. We probably shouldn’t do that, there’s not really a great medical justification for it, it was originally to stop boys from masturbating and isn’t required in Christianity because of what Jesus said about it.
