The concept is strange. There is no God, but some religions are real and should be tolerated but others are fake and must be banned. That’s a wacky idea.

Marxism Leninism generally advocated for state atheism. A secular government is pluralistic, it allows for individuals to practice a number of faiths or no faith at all, but the government doesn’t make an assertion that God does or does not exist. State atheism is when the government denounces religion outright and requires people to be atheist to serve in government for ideological reasons.

Of course, China describes themselves as "Socialist with Chinese characteristics" which is a modification on Maoism which is a modification on Leninism, which is a modification on Marxism, so really China is kinda doing something that’s tangentially related to whatever the heck Marx was thinking and using the aesthetic of hammers and sickles because they think it looks cool, basically.

China is clever because it embraced facets of capitalism while letting business owners know they’re just asset managers. Like when Jack Ma disappeared.

Religion is just another tool. The Soviets were upset about a Siberian people that have communal relations and share partners as a matter of custom and social cohesion. So the Soviets rushed in missionaries to try to convert them and break the practice. The Soviets also realized it was easier to co-opt and control the various Orthodox clergy and patriarchs than it was to level every church.

Capitalism and democracy are completely unrelated concepts. If anything capitalism and authoritarianism complement each other. When Russia stopped adhering to Marxism, they didn’t become any more democratic.

The Russian constitution is almost democratic in theory, because earlier in Putin’s presidency they thought they had to pretend to be a democracy, so they had weird rules, like early on in Putin’s presidency, Russia had term limits, but only for consecutive terms, so Putin got a break every so often. But now they don’t even pretend, he’s just president for life outright.
