I used to. I’ve seen this work in places like Richmond, but that’s the South. Pittsburgh has emphasized greenways and walkability and it makes a difference. Some buildings or old retaining walls aren’t demolished for lack of funds. Let artists paint them nicely.
These areas can work if they’re done organically with local input. If the major just brings in a bunch of chains and big developer buddies they’re just another shitty money grab.

It was worth it. Amazing. Sad thing is I go there for work and have a great time. There are wonderful local restaurants, it has a surprisingly good natural history museum, and other features. I probably wouldn’t make it a destination.

There’s a river walk in Passaic. The water is orange and tires are floating. There’s a world of difference between some European city that has expanded outward from Church and aristocratic needs to be quaint and pretty, and some mid-sized American city built to the needs of one or more industrialists.
