A man against the monarchy who crowned himself emperor, tried taking over Europe, lost, got put in exile, broke out of jail and did it again. Hitler just shot himself in the head, maybe Hitler was more evil, but Hitler committing suicide is way less annoying than if he allowed himself to be captured by the Soviets and then escaped back to Germany to take over Europe a second time.

I guess Hannibal also, but in a different way. It’s sort of two fold: he went on an impressive campaign across the alps and kept winning battle after battle in Italy, he made it to the gates of the city of Rome, and then he left. That’s annoying in two ways: it’s annoying that somebody would be that good at fighting and it’s also annoying that somebody that good at fighting would get that close to winning and then not win. All of history would have been different if he just attacked one more city. And then he wasn’t even defeated in battle he lived he just left.

Something about marching an army over a mountain range in a surprised attack against the Roman Empire just sounds epic. He didn’t even win, but it’s just the audacity of it though. It’s like Pearl Harbor but if the Japanese were smart and actually good at fighting and made it to Washington D.C. after marching over the Rocky Mountains somehow and then Japan lost. That would be 1,000x more impressive.

I wonder. if the Japanese made it to Washington D.C and kamikaze’d the fuck out of it, would we be so traumatized that we would build a whole entertainment franchise revolving around a persistent creature that will always fly towards to the U.S and blow itself up?
