I think all of us here in this place called America, whether left wing or right wing, regardless of what our expressed ideology and opinions are, secretly have this subconscious itch telling us we have it too good in this society and things can’t possibly keep working like this forever and our civilization should really crash and burn.

It’s a cultural meme we have, we all want the world to end. The rich are getting richer, we know we throw away plastic every single day, we know we haul two tones of metal around with us everywhere we go burning dinosaur juice (that actually comes from plants not animals but whatever). We know this shouldn’t be able to keep going forever. We know the economy can’t grow exponentially forever, we know the population can’t grow exponentially forever (although that one is actually ending and will stop in the 2080s). We just feel like it should all crash and burn.

I was thinking about this the other day. Obviously our civilization will not last forever. But it might last longer than we do, which will be an anxiety inducing experience.
