Americans have become so accustomed to having our government just perform extrajudicial executions that I'm a little surprised it's taken until trump to see a genuine possibility of the US sliding into overt fascism.

Institutions were stronger. It took decades of bad governance since the 1970s and progressive deregulation to erode institutions and subvert social norms. In tandem with massive accumulation of capital by an ever-smaller subset of oligarchs. Mix in crises like 9/11, where people accepted the surveillance state and Patriot Act as if they’d be any safer from rare and randomized terrorist violence. The goal is to make people feel ambivalent and powerless so they’ll tune out.
