Without a question speeding up. Almost nobody was talking about AI 5 years ago and now people won't shut the fuck up about it and we're on the verge of using it to implement a surveillance state in which feds can watch you jerk off, take a shit, shower, etc. How the actual fuck could anyone say it's slowing down?

Because artificial neural networks are older than you think they are.

The only thing that changed recently is someone had the idea to use neural networks to generate text, but even back in 2012 neural networks were being used in software. They just didn’t advertise it as "AI" because software companies didn’t realize they could get more investment by calling it AI instead of ML because all the 1980s kids would think of terminator or whatever.

For example, in the 2010s when they started adding features like face unlock, fingerprint scanning, voice recognition, etc. to smartphones, those tasks utilize machine learning algorithms. Recommendation algorithms also, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, etc. generally utilize neural networks. But that was never advertised as "AI." Instead they just redefined the term AI to mean ML and created a new term AGI to mean what everybody thought the term AI meant before ChatGPT, because it’s just a marketing strategy.

I'm aware. The difference is now every government on the planet is dumping billions into AI putting this shit into anything and everything. It's undoubtedly going to accelerate technological progress in certain fields by a lot as these AI tools become more specialized

If you were someone who was really into technology in the 2010s, you would know what a neural network was but you probably wouldn’t refer to it as "AI" and I think now I don’t really like calling LLMs AI because they’re not intelligent. The reason larger models appear more intelligent is just because they’ve memorized more information from their training data, but they’re not actually smart in the way that humans are.

Yeah, but I think that’s a mistake that they’re making honestly. The technology is useful, but it’s also computationally inefficient so it has higher energy requirements and higher compute requirements. The price they’re charging people to use generative AI doesn’t make up for the cost it takes to maintain these data centers.

Well he's post spamming again so time to ignore him. What a shame it was an interesting topic but he can't help himself.

Of course, it does have benefits for the government, but those benefits aren’t inherently economic benefits.

Why are you talking to yourself?

If you don’t like that I have a different opinion, you could be mature about it.

Some people are just stupid, there’s not much you can do about it. If you hurt their feelings they act like babies.
