The period of peak star formation in the universe is already over, but red dwarfs can live for trillions of years, so we’re still at the very beginning of the era where the universe has stars. But eventually the universe will run out of hydrogen and when red dwarfs die, they won’t be large enough to explode as supernovas and no new starts will form. So the universe will be dark forever, basically. Unless dark energy changes in the future, which, I dunno, maybe.

Luckily, our sun is a G type dwarf, meaning it has a lifespan of around 10 billion years, meaning we’re halfway to the end of the life of our sun, even though the most common type of star in the universe is red dwarfs and they’ll live a thousand times longer. So we got really lucky with that. And even better, the sun’s luminosity increases by 10% every billion years which means we’re closer to the end of life on Earth than the beginning because in a billion years the oceans will boil away.

The best part is none of that matters because you only live 100 years, if that. Because you’re the center of the universe and the creator of the universe obviously thought you in particular were special for some reason. Duh.

And the sun might consume the earth when it dies. So in 5 billion years, it will be impossible to know earth ever existed because it will be inside of the sun.
