I was the sysadmin for a server running Windows server 2012 so this may not be universal.
If you have files on it, they will just stay there until you move them or delete them. A hard drive failure is possible but if you have RAID that should not mean the files are really lost.

This is a tangent but Reed Solomon error correction is cool. There’s an algorithm that QR codes use to store binary data where you can lose any of the bits from any part of the encoded data and you can still recover all of the data. A similar thing happens with holographic crystals, where every part of the crystal contains the entire image.

Apparently that’s also why, I mean nobody uses CDs anymore, but if you had a scratch on a CD, it would still work fine because a computer could figure out what the missing bits were.
