Can you elaborate on the "preaching to Jews" part? Judaism is a different religion, and traditionally, the Catholic Church was very antisemitic. Hitler only capitalized on preexisting prejudices in Europe.

Catholicism as a religious idea, Jesus as a person, and the actions of Catholics as flawed humans aren’t one and the same. I can acknowledge that people who were Catholic did things in the past that I consider to be bad, but that doesn’t inherently change how I feel about Jesus or have anything to do with whether I agree with the teachings of Catholicism.

The Church had a broader project to convert Jews. It’s all funny because Jesus (Yeshua, Joshua) started out as a Jewish reformer to break down the barriers to entry for a heavily rule-based religion.
The real split was the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD under Titus. The Diaspora ensured there’d never be a fusion between Judaism and Christianity, which came from strains of the former that sought the return of the messiah to topple Rome.

Israel was a Roman colony, the Jews wanted a savior because they were oppressed by Roman occupation. The reason why Judaism still exists is because some Jews were never convinced that Jesus was the messiah.

The greatest irony is that Jews weren’t tolerated by the Romans due to their monotheism conflicting with Roman polytheism, so they wanted a messiah. Yet after the arrival of Jesus (who Christians believe is the messiah), while initially Christianity was persecuted in the Roman Empire (because early Christians refused to serve in the Roman army), Rome legalized and then slowly converted to Christianity. In medieval Europe, the view in Europe became that since Jews didn’t believe in Jesus and Christians believe that Jesus is the human incarnation of God and therefore is perfect and without sin, that to be against an absolute good, you must be evil. So there was a lot of mistreatment of Jews, which led to Jews having to stick together more. Which of course, fueled more antisemitic conspiracy theories until eventually you get to Hitler taking it to the furthest extreme.

So the Jews got a savior, basically, which is what they wanted, and their enemy, the Romans converted to become followers of that savior, but the fact that not all of the Jews became Christians and Europeans became convinced of the divinity of Christ, Jews remained oppressed.

It’s kind of awful actually. Compared to any other prejudice, there really isn’t an equivalent to antisemitism. Even racism against Africans isn’t as old as antisemitism. Anti black racism was invented about 500 years ago, before that, there was slavery in Africa and in Europe, but it wasn’t race based. The Romans had slaves but it wasn’t based on ethnicity. The holocaust also killed close to half the Jews that were alive in the world at the time. The only group that probably had it worse would be the indigenous Americans.
