Topic: Why don't people learn the distinction between reason and emotion in schools?

Anonymous A started this discussion 11 minutes ago #137,247

I don't mean complicated logic, just what each means and how to distinguish them?

One mistake I've seen some make (niganon has made this same mistake 2-3 times on here) is thinking that "being emotional" means that you have emotions, as opposed to being an unfeeling robot. It's such an elementary thing to know, but many people don't get it. It makes me wonder if they even have a conception of internal feelings vs. outward expression.

Rationality can be complex, but it's not hard to understand whether someone can even furnish a reason for a belief, vs someone who just acts out an insults another when asked what their reason is. Getting into whether those reasons are sound or fallacious is a whole different matter, I'm strictly speaking about the ability of a person to know why having reasons matters.

Cool story bro.

Now that I think about it, maybe they do have an understanding of internal feelings and outward expression, but they can't conceieve of a person that can control their emotions, so they assume people that can do that are simply emotionless.

Anything to add to the conversation?

I think your definition of "logic" is just whatever you think, and if anybody ever disagrees with you, then they’re being irrational.

Well, you were talking to yourself.

No, I just explained my definition at the simplest level.

Being able to furnish a reason, rather than just getting mad and insulting people.

Your theory is that people don’t understand emotion and reason but you’re the only one who understands how thinking works. Have you ever considered that if everyone in the world has a brain, if you can’t understand what’s going on in everybody else’s head, you might be the weirdo?

It can go deeper than that, of course, some people will use fallacies, and other will avoid them.

But at the most surface level, rationality is being able to justify a belief.

No, that's a strawman, I never said I was the only one.

I've met many, many people who understand this. There are just many people who don't as well.

And it's not my definition, you can look these words up.

Like one time you told me I have no idea how human instincts work. But that’s a stupid thing to say, because I’m also a human and I have the same instincts as everybody else. I was just saying what I genuinely feel, which is different than what you felt.

I’m using words right now, if I don’t understand the meaning of words how am I talking to you right now? Have you ever considered that the problem might be you?

I can obviously think. If I couldn’t think, then how would I survive? If you think I don’t think, or I can’t use logic, that means you don’t understand me. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing going on inside my head, there’s obviously stuff happening inside my head. You just don’t understand it, that’s your own problem.

We're talking about the meanings of words like rationality and emotion.

I don't have personal definitions for them, just the standard dictionary definitions.

I explained the distinction and you still decided to say I just thought it meant whoever agreed or disagreed with me, which is clearly not what I just said.

I've met people who disagree, and still approach it rationally. I've met people I agree with but they can't approach it rationally and just take everything personally and are unable to ever explain their beliefs.

You take everything way too literally. Sometimes I genuinely wonder if you’re autistic.

I didn't say you couldn't think, that's the second strawman so far.

Why are you unable to respond to what I actually said, and keep pretending I said something else?

Emotional people think, but thinking isn't the same thing as approaching things rationally.
