You know how heat can only flow from a hot place to a cold place? So if you have two liquids that exchange heat, they can only ever reach equilibrium, you can’t continue on past that. Well if you went backwards in time, heat would flow from cold places to warm places. And you can’t reverse time. But if you went backwards in time, you would be traveling in the opposite direction. So if you have two fluids traveling in pipes going in opposite directions, the colder fluid exits warmer than the fluid that went in hotter. (The arrows point in opposite directions, so they actually do swap places.)
