Topic: Japan gets a lot of passes huh

Anonymous A started this discussion 3 weeks ago #137,053

I was reading some old comments in response to a guy having some type of crisis of conscience or whatever regarding to the band dir en grey(listening to their album atm)

Seems like the guy had a hard time differentiating art from reality due to their graphic themes. However what I find amusing is when it comes to anything related to japan, westerners will unite in order to defend Japanese culture and society which of course its conservative values are well entrenched.

Now dont get me wrong I can like their games, music and what not and I know their culture is vastly different in terms of whats normal for them but damn the white knight’ing for that country is very strong lol

I can’t blame folks though. It’s one of the last bastions of a bygone time when people can wear nazi chic attire, crack a couple nigga jokes and be perverted without much judgment or persecution. A rightist paradise if you will.

Ironically, Japan is the best example that conservative culture doesn’t work. If you don’t have children because you have a harsh work culture but you also don’t have immigration, it’s leads to you falling behind economically and technologically.

They defend Japan because they identify with the culture. You have to remember there was a time when people thought Japan would come to rule the world after their massive growth in the 80s. These kids growing up on "super hella mondo rad as shit" foreign cartoons with blood and violence hell yeah!! and the TV is saying Japan will rule the world in the future? and the girls are all shy and kawaii??? and I hop online and people are saying konnichiwa and arigato??? These kids feel like they're part Japanese because they grew up with this stuff despite never setting foot on Japanese soil. This is all before any notions of racial purity or other pol stuff that's convinced them if Japan falls white people are next or whatever. Japan was smart and played the soft power card. The US does the same shit but Americans don't realize to what extent it's affected young people in other countries. If you go up to a young person in another country, chances are high they'll talk to you about the same shit you watch (marvel movies, watching ishowspeed streams, speaking almost perfect English in an American accent, etc).

Japan used to be a leader in technology but they missed out on the whole smartphone revolution which led to them falling behind Korea and Taiwan in semiconductor manufacturing. You need young people in order to innovate.

Tbh I just think it’s weird that people still have the mentality that Japan is leading the world in technology because of something that literally happened 20 years before I was born. Especially when you compare China to Japan, they completely swapped places in terms of economic and technological power.

I also think it’s kinda stupid whenever MAGA types glorify Japan and they say they want a white Christian nation when Japan is neither Christian or white, and Nigerians actually support Trump more than Japanese people do. It doesn’t make any logical sense. Then they’ll try to compare Japanese culture to African culture and call black people low IQ like they think it will make us jealous or something that white people pretend to like them, but it’s obvious the only reason why they say that is because Japan just accepted that they lost World War Two, they go nuked, and they don’t complain about it and stay in their place. But that’s not enviable.

One of the paradoxical things about economics is there’s a trade off between equality and efficiency. The American economy is more efficient than any economy in Asia, yet we have a problem with inequality. But it turns out the two are correlated. When a country becomes wealthier it often becomes unequal. So there might be more visible poverty here, but if you start looking into the data on it, we’re significantly richer on a per capita basis than even developed Asian countries like Japan for instance, even on a purchasing power parody basis.

The point of a country is that we’re supposed to live our lives in a way so that we benefit our country. I want to live in a strong country. I don’t give a shit what somebody looks like if they’re smart and they’re hardworking and they want to come to my country to do the hard work that’s necessary to keep my country on top because I love my country. If someone was born here and they don’t feel like working and contributing to the country to the point where they feel entitled to deny opportunity to somebody more talented and hardworking than they are, then maybe I don’t care about that person.

Tbh the statistics are from before Trump bombed Nigeria so it might have changed. Nigeria was colonized by the British so even thought Trump types focus on the Muslim half of the country because they’re anti Islam, the other half of Nigerians are mostly Protestant Christians which ironically is very culturally similar to the United States in some ways since the US is also a former British colony. They have their own version of the prosperity gospel going on, they like Trump because he’s rich. There are also other Christian countries in Africa, like the DRC for instance where most people are Catholic and it might be a bit different.

There’s a positive side to it though, Nigerians are actually relatively industrious. Nigerian immigrants to the US actually have similar rates of earning graduate degrees when compared with Chinese immigrants and a lot of Nigerian immigrants are business owners. So it’s not all negative there’s also a positive to it.

I was just pointing it out because it’s ironic when MAGA types say that countries like Japan are more similar to the west when in some ways there are African countries that are more culturally similar. They just don’t want to admit it because they look down on those places for being black and poor.

Mr. Bloody Lemonade !0JqexkOGBc quadruple-posted this 3 weeks ago, 3 minutes later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #1,453,125

Like they claim to be Christian nationalists and then will say they’re more culturally similar to Japan than Nigeria when Nigeria has 100 million Christians and Japan has 100 million people who are not Christian. Racism is just bizarre to me when people try to merge it with Christianity. Catholicism for example is actually growing instead of shrinking, but the west isn’t having children and people are becoming less religious in developed countries, but the population growth in Africa counteracts that. It’s just weird how somebody could claim to be religious and not understand that.

Yeah it’s quite pathetic because even most Japanese make fun foreigners for being simps and just being willfully idolatry towards them.

In fact foreigners will defend japan despite never being there even from other foreigners like as if they’re courting favor. Like the Japanese are very conservative they don’t care much for either white or black people mucking up their country in anyway. They won’t say it to your face and they’ll graciously accept your money but it’s like don’t overstay your welcome. If doesnt matter if you assimilate because they just do not like you.

It’s funny because you’ll have white or black foreigners trying to appease them via cope by presenting themselves in a way thats like “oh look at us we’re nothing like those guys, we love and worship your culture! Please love us! We’re the one good ones!”

But most Japanese either find that extremely weird or they just do not care nor understand that. To them anybody not Japanese is an invader and they should gtfo lol

I look forward to the day that the rose-tinted glasses finally fall off and see people do a 180 and just treat the Japanese like how western foreigners treat
Indians lol

Tbh, I have a university requirement to learn a foreign language and I wanted to learn Chinese but then I started thinking Japan is allied with us, but I ended up just going with Chinese instead. I don’t really know how to say it exactly because I’ve met more Chinese people than Japanese people but people have this weird anal retentive thing going on with Japanese culture where it’s like, "Oh Japanese culture is super unique and special and that’s why they can’t tolerate diversity they’re just afraid because they like following the rules," but then Chinese people don’t seem anal retentive like that. Idk.

Although, that said, in spite of all the crazy stuff white people did around the world with the slavery and the colonizing and the nukes: Freudian psychology may be batshit crazy, but you’ve gotta admit, some of the terminology is great for describing things. "Anal retentive." The idea is incredibly goofy, some people develop a certain personality where they have to always strictly follow the rules and can’t tolerate anything chaotic or disorderly because when they were toddlers learning how to use the bathroom, they were so disgusted by their poop that they would gain pleasure from holding their poop in. Absolutely ridiculous theory, but it definitely identified and describes a real personality trait and it attaches a negative connotation to it in a way that’s pretty useful. Definitely creepy that a grown man was thinking and writing about this, but I hate to admit it, anal retentive is kinda a useful term. Gotta give credit where it’s due.

I think you’re getting being culturally conservative mixed up with being politically conservative. I don’t have any issue with preserving culture, I think religion has value when it comes to social cohesion in a way that can be good for your mental health as long as it’s not fundamentalist or anything. I’m not politically conservative… in the United States. If I was Canadian then I might be. Everything is relative.

Mr. Bloody Lemonade !0JqexkOGBc double-posted this 3 weeks ago, 2 minutes later, 3 days after the original post[^] [v] #1,453,560

It is possible to be culturally conservative and ideologically left wing when it comes to politics. I don’t really have an issue with cultural conservatism, I’ve been friends with Muslims for example before, and it was completely fine. I don’t have an issue with conservative cultures, I have an issue with conservative politics. It’s fine to have strict beliefs as long as you don’t have a stick up your ass and start having grievances against others simply based on the fact that they’re not exactly the same as you.

Mr. Bloody Lemonade !0JqexkOGBc triple-posted this 3 weeks ago, 4 minutes later, 3 days after the original post[^] [v] #1,453,562

I think half the problem is just language is ambiguous, when I said "conservative culture doesn’t work" I could have meant:

1. Japan has a culture which is conservative and that doesn’t work

2. Japan has a culture of being politically conservative and that doesn’t work

3. Japanese culture has a tendency of having political beliefs which are conservative about tolerating other cultures and that doesn’t work

I really meant the 3rd one but from how I said it, it wasn’t clear.

Mr. Bloody Lemonade !0JqexkOGBc quadruple-posted this 3 weeks ago, 5 minutes later, 3 days after the original post[^] [v] #1,453,564

Like Muslims for example, have a culture which is conservative, more so than my religion and my culture, but often, in the US at least, Muslims might have a political ideology that’s less conservative, and they’re not always (depends on the person from my experience at least) aren’t always conservative about whether or not they can hang out with people who aren’t exactly like them. So for example, I’ve met Muslims who didn’t have any issue with the fact that I’m Christian, and even if they’re conservative, that can work. That’s more what I’m getting at.

I actually don’t know that much about Shinto, but I have heard that in Shinto religion they have a belief that human nature is fundamentally good and I guess (if I’m not mistaken) is the idea is that humans become corrupted through their experiences. Which is interesting because, I don’t know about Islam, but at least in Catholicism the vibe I always got going to church as a kid is that in Catholicism the belief is that because of our original sin from Adam and Eve all humans except for Mary and Jesus are born with sin, so we all have evil within us, but life is a test and after we die we will be purified in purgatory. Which, I mean it has meaning, but it is maybe less positive, I don’t know if you would categorize that as liberal or conservative, but it would be interesting to know more about that.

Mr. Bloody Lemonade !0JqexkOGBc septuple-posted this 3 weeks ago, 2 minutes later, 3 days after the original post[^] [v] #1,453,567

Although it’s interesting American conservatives will say they don’t believe in original sin when they’re talking about race, which is kinda funny because original sin is the basis of Christianity if you think about it. It’s why Jesus had to die for us. Although I agree that you can’t be held responsible for what your ancestors did in that particular sense. But still, it’s a little ironic.

It’s also true at the extremes, if you look at communism vs Nazism. Nazism is basically the idea of "what if evil is true and even though killing the weak is bad progress can only be achieved by killing off the weak so the strong can live" so it naturally glorifies cruelty and war, while communism is based around the idea of equality.
