The idea is that they won’t be able to generate electricity with this but they can experiment with fusion to think about ways to make electricity with it in another mega project in the future after this one. Since most of the Earth is covered in water, the idea is if we could make electricity from fusion we could produce huge amounts clean energy without using fossil fuel basically forever. It would also have implications for space travel… if you could miniaturize it. Probably won’t happen before 2100.

Ignore the part at the bottom where it says "60 years of progress." They just had this idea yesterday, they haven’t been trying and failing to generate electricity with fusion for 60 years.

I wonder what aliens think about the fact we’ve been failing to generate electricity from hydrogen for 60 years and have been dying over dinosaur juice wars when we have 4 planets made from hydrogen. Aliens must think we’re stupid, and they’re probably right.

The human brain has pretty amazing power efficiency. No matter how powerful computers are, it’s kind of impossible to argue that any computer comes close in terms of processing power per watt to biology. And the signals travel so much slower in the human brain, but the amount of computation the human brain does even with signals traveling that slow and power requirements that low is really amazing.

And of course, 80 billion neurons doesn’t sound like a lot, but when you start counting connections between neurons it’s like 1,000x the number of stars in the galaxy.

1. It takes 18 years for a human to reach adulthood, and many more years to get higher education. This is much more intensive than an AI model that can be trained once and copied an infinite number of times immediately and for near-zero cost.
2. The human brain will spend more time and energy to generate an essay than a comparable model would. Especially if you consider the environmental costs of the human diet.
