It's the case in pretty much every country. People historically built their settlements near water for obvious reasons so if it's not near the coast or there isn't a giant river nearby, chances are nobody lives there.

Tbh even today, it seems like we still rely heavily on shipping. Whenever people talk about selling on Mars that’s something I sorta wonder about. I mean, there’s the whole breathing thing, but what would be the logistics of transporting goods? There aren’t any oceans or anything. On Earth, places with worse geography tend to either be poorer (if it’s a warm climate) or virtually uninhabited (if it’s a cold climate). Even with all our advancements, our success seems to be limited by our natural resources in a pretty profound way.
